Branching Out for a Greener Tomorrow: Arbor Day 2024 by Shenequa Williams
Arbor Day is a time to celebrate the importance of trees and their role in sustainable life on Earth. In Antigua and Barbuda, this annual observance serves as a reminder of how vital trees are to the islands’ environment, economy, and overall well-being.
Trees provide countless benefits, including preventing soil erosion and improving air quality. They also support biodiversity by offering habitats for birds, insects, and other wildlife. Additionally, fruit trees such as mango, tamarind, and guava contribute to food security and promote a connection to the local agriculture industry.
This Arbor Day, individuals and communities across Antigua and Barbuda are encouraged to plant trees in their neighbourhoods, backyards, or schools. Whether it’s a shade tree to cool a home or a fruit tree to nourish a family, every tree planted makes a difference. For this year to commemorate Arbor Day, the Department of Environment Division will be hosting a Plant Fair from 10:00 am – 4:30 pm at the Department of Environment. Join us for thrilling prize opportunities.
This day is also an opportunity to reflect on sustainable practices such as protecting existing forests and reducing deforestation. By planting and caring for trees, we not only beautify our surroundings but also contribute to a healthier, more resilient future for our islands. Together, let’s grow stronger by growing greener.
