A New Union on the Horizon: Hurst Confirms Drafting of Charter Underway

Plans to establish a new hotel union in Antigua and Barbuda have moved a step forward, with a draft charter currently being developed, according to Government Spokesman Lionel Hurst.

Speaking during a recent interview, Hurst confirmed that the initial framework—including rules, regulations, and a constitution—is being finalised, drawing inspiration from existing structures such as the Antigua Trades and Labour Union and the Antigua Workers’ Union.

“This is a necessary evolution in representing the interests of hospitality workers,” Hurst explained, noting that the drafting process is being led by a group of union organisers and will be followed by consultation with stakeholders.

The move comes amid increasing calls for improved working conditions and stronger representation in one of the country’s most vital industries—tourism.

With hotels and resorts making up a significant portion of the economy, a dedicated union is seen as a strategic tool for negotiating fair wages, benefits, and job security.

Hurst indicated that once the charter is completed, it will be presented for broader discussion among workers and industry players.

“This is not a rushed process.

It is deliberate, inclusive, and focused on ensuring long-term viability.”

The proposed union could also serve to fill gaps in advocacy left by traditional structures, particularly as the sector adapts to new labour dynamics post-pandemic.

If successful, the new body would join a legacy of labour activism in Antigua and Barbuda—one that has historically been central to social progress and economic justice in the country.

  1. WONDERFUL NEWS 👏
    Teachers have their own union
Hospitality workers need their own too

  2. Never pass laws whilst in government that you know you can’t live with in opposition.
Today you may be in government.
Tomorrow you may not even be in government let alone opposition.
Something that is not broken needs not fixing.
The union representing hotel workers have served them well.
That has not gone too well for the PeeeeeeeeeM who wants to have the hotel owners in his pocket.
Hence he is using some power hungry people to begin a new union.
Isn’t it queer that a politician is interested in forming a union that has nothing to do with him or government directly?
    That should raise eyebrows.
This is the definition of union busting.
Anything that cuts down on the power of the AT&LU is facing opposition from Gassy and his cabal.
The AT&LU speaks only when the ALP speaks.
    They never oppose the government.
My plea to those being used by Gassy to advance his agenda should be shut down.
My people, take a step back.
Do you remember what Gassy used his loyalists to do to Stafford Joseph?
Stafford Joseph was a high official in the AT&LU.
However he didn’t toe Gassy’s line and Gassy used the other cult members in the union to cut his throat.
Today he is using you to for a union that will be answerable to him.
    Don’t fall for that.
Don’t be used by a man who has shown that he uses and disposes who he wants when they are no longer of use to him.
