ABS– Veteran petrol station proprietor, George ‘Charlie’ Barnes, was shot dead in Ottos Friday night. The businessman was reportedly shot in the chest during an attack by armed assailants outside his home.
The circumstances surrounding the incident are not immediately clear. The hoodlums reportedly fled in a vehicle following the shooting which occurred about 10pm.
Investigators have launched a high-level probe into the incident, and are urging anyone with information which can lead to the perpetrators being nabbed, to contact the Criminal Investigations Department at 462-3913.
The murder has sent shockwaves across the business community and the entire nation. Barnes has operated his business on Sir Sydney Walling Highway for several years.

Our leaders have now got what they want. Civil Society is afraid and crumbling. They have left our kids dumb and lost. They have neglected to keep us safe and protected.
A man and woman can work hard all thier lives, support the system and this is what can happen and be expected. Crime hasn’t gone down, people just dont report anymore because we have no leadership in Law Enforcement.

@Eldread The actual cameras system that you see around are functional and aren’t working, those cameras are good cameras. But just ask yourself this questions. Who have the resources to allocate a budget to make them work? to purchase the Hardware (Monitoring stations, Servers, etc) necessary to operate them?
You no need to go to China, there is a lot of local people who know to to make this system Live on again. But Why they don’t allocate funds to do it? Who don’t want those cameras operating 24/7? Those cameras are located in good locations, they will help a lot to track everything, But maybe some group don’t want to be catch, and intentionally don’t want that system operation to get away with their mess. just think about it

The majority of us rightly observed the National Day of Prayer. However, even though the attendance at the march in the main was well attended, there was a distinct group of people not in attendance.
Many young men were missing.
And it’s these young men that need to be reached out to, by the churches, more government employment initiatives, or even military recruitment to install more discipline.
Without a shadow of a doubt crime is now spiralling out of control at a rate of knots in Antigua.
Is it the lack of employment opportunities; the relaxation of drug laws in the country, or simply evil behaviour now enveloping us.
Many Antiguans have called for Prime Minister Gaston Browne to address the nation as soon as possible, and to let us know what is going to be his approach to halt this tidal wave of criminal activities.
The fact that the cabinet had a meeting with the ABDF the other day is to be commended, but Antiguans need to know the outcomes of such meetings forthwith.

I grew up seeing Charlie at that gas station. He treated his workers like family, and he always helped people in need. I can’t understand why anyone would want to hurt him.
I will also add that it seems as if in ANtigua…gunmen are walking around with no regard for human life. That has to stop. We need stronger laws, tougher enforcement, and more community support to keep our island safe
Charlie was more than just the man who owned a gas station he was part of our everyday life. If you passed through the pumps, he’d wave, he’d smile, sometimes even crack a joke. To lose him like this… it’s heartbreaking

We are at the stage in Antigua and Barbuda where strategic positioning of cameras at different locations are the only thing that would help us. The footage of cameras are what was used in solving the recent murder of a high profile conservative person in Utah. Murderers get away in Antigua because they can easily escape and flee on the public roadways without any recourse. Cameras are the only thing that would save us and being a small country it is easily doable. We pray for peace but the brutally continues. Only God knows.

This is the very same Administration who’s against the death penalty, claiming that Chantel killer who is now sitting in prison, does not deserve the death penalty, or the death penalty is not warranted in her case.
Soft soft soft..so what else y’all expect. These young killers know that they are only getting a slap on the wrist. Look what happened to the 16 year old who killed the Sirian.

What I do not understand @ Islanman26, is that during the Covid-19 pandemic, many Antiguans marched on the streets in a peaceful protest, and the Prime Minister Gaston Browne had no problem whatsoever with placing black shirted military on the streets and yhen tear gassing innocent women and children (even the police who weren’t wearing masks were effected) on the 21st of August 2021
Yet, he can’t do likewise with criminals???

We have to come to the conclusion that this PM and AG have lost their north star, they have become far in the stomach, and have gotten lazy. This is the only explanation for this inept ability to eradicate this scourge that has befallen Antigua.
Wickedness can be brought under control, and it is those that are in power who has the backing of the voters to do so.
