Petition Calling for Independent Probe into $15M Vehicle Scandal Launched
A petition demanding an independent, transparent and forensic investigation into the Ministry of Works has been launched, with citizens urging authorities to fully disclose all details surrounding the unauthorized purchase of more than 200 vehicles reportedly costing around $15 million.
The petition states that, without clarity from the government, the public is left to speculate about a wide range of unresolved issues tied to the alleged procurement scandal. These include the identities of those involved, who authorized the spending, whether any rules or laws were broken, and whether other financial irregularities occurred during the process.
It also raises questions about why several senior officials were reassigned or resigned in the aftermath of the controversy. The document further points to possible involvement of employees at the Port Authority, the Customs Division, and the Antigua and Barbuda Transport Board.
According to the petition, these developments have fueled concerns about whether private individuals received government-purchased vehicles and whether a broader conspiracy contributed to what has become one of the most debated public issues of the year.
Citing the public’s interest and the need for full transparency, the petitioners call on Governor-General Sir Rodney Williams and the Cabinet to appoint “suitable and qualified persons” to conduct an independent and fair forensic investigation into the vehicle matter.
They are requesting a probe that extends beyond the Ministry of Works to any other ministry, department or statutory body that may have been involved.
The petition says the call is being made “knowingly and voluntarily” by the signatories, who argue that only a thorough and credible inquiry can restore public confidence and provide the answers citizens have been seeking.
