The Government of Antigua and Barbuda has decided that all persons who are to be quarantined for a minimum of 14 days will be placed in a government-controlled facility, since the risk of community spread is too great when home quarantine is allowed.
According to chief of staff, Lionel Hurst, the Health Emergency Regulations provide the legal basis for such a decision to be enforced.
Meanwhile, Antiguans living in the Dominican Republic who wish to return to Antigua will be compelled to undergo two weeks quarantine in the Dominican Republic, and two weeks’ quarantine upon arrival in Antigua.
Currently, there has been no new cases of COVID-19 reported within the past 48 hours.
Four COVID-19 patients are in the MSJMC Intensive Care Union (ICU), two are on ventilators.

For both people who are already here and those who arrive?
Not a bad idea but this government-controlled facility will need to be good enough to entice persons who are to be quarantined. Or else You’d have local individuals who would be reluctant to come forward unless they’re really sick which means hospital. Some of them would prefer to be use all the home remedies and the like while in the comfort of their daily routine, their home sweet home, rather than in some facility that is unequipped.
Their best shot is to put that facility on steroids and make it dope enough. A forced staycation that is not inhumane would suffice.
I agree that the risk of community spread is too great when home quarantine is allowed.
Nice move.Although some aspects need to be taken into consideration.
1-Good living conditions put in place
2-Separate suspects from positive cases (the positive cases that don’t require hospitalization)
3-Adecuate spase between each suspect place in the facility. As one may be a suspect to turn negative without symptoms, but another may be a positive. So if not done this way it is going to spread withing the facility itself.
This is a positive move…. Finally
Mel, it look like these people really starting to take things serious. Yes, it’s one good move.
It is sad that the govt has reached to that decision to have all suspected cases, to be quarantined at a govt facility…. I can only assume that persons are found to be irresponsible & disobedient when asked to stay at home….. Sometimes when we are a yard is given to us, we tend to take a mile…. Now with that been said, I am only hoping that at the govt facility each quarantined person will have their own personal area (social distance) for themselves so that, if by any chance anyone is infected with the virus, the setting at the facility will not allow other persons to get easily infected…….
This will just encourage people who are symptomatic to not go to the authorities. They will keep their illness secret so that they can remain home unless they desperately need to go to hospital. It won’t necessarily cause more community spread but it will lead to Covid+ cases not being reported. If Antigua’s Covid+ numbers are artificially low, we may not get the outside help we really need.
Every action has a reaction. Before declaring what might seem like a positive or necessary restriction, the Government really needs to think things through from all angles and scenarios. For example, the initial announcement that all shops would be closed on the long Easter weekend caused mass panic. It wasn’t the fault of a disobedient public “not getting it”, it was a natural and predictable reaction that could’ve easily been avoided had the Government considered the consequences.
Quarantine my foot. They need to stop telling us lies and get on with the testing.
As long as you come into this country you should be tested. Too long now.
Remember patient O showed no signs or symptoms after a while in quarantine, but still tested positive twice since.
We still haven’t heard if she has been tested positive since
