Commissioner Refutes Rumors of Suspect in Custody in MP Asot Michael Murder Investigation

Antigua’s Commissioner of Police Atlee Rodney has dismissed public speculation that a suspect is in custody for the murder of MP Asot Michael, clarifying that no formal arrests have been made in the high-profile investigation.

“We have been interviewing a number of persons connected to this case, but to say we have a suspect in custody is incorrect,” Rodney said during an interview on Observer Radio.

“We are working tirelessly, speaking to persons of interest and gathering every piece of information. But at this stage, no one has been charged.”

State media, ABS, reported breaking news less than 24 hours after Michael’s death of a suspect in custody.

Rodney acknowledged that social media posts had fueled rumors about an alleged suspect, but cautioned the public against believing unverified information.

“It’s unfortunate when misinformation spreads, especially in sensitive cases like this one. We urge the public to rely on updates directly from the police to avoid any confusion or distress to the family and community,” he added.

The commissioner also addressed comparisons made by members of the public between Michael’s case and other unresolved homicides.

Some have questioned the urgency given to the MP’s investigation, but Rodney insisted that the police handle all murder cases with equal commitment. “Every case is treated with the same vigor, the same energy. It’s not fair to assume otherwise,” he said.

A team of senior investigators has been assembled to work on Michael’s case, with Rodney assuring the public that all available resources, including potential assistance from regional and international law enforcement agencies, are being employed to resolve it.

“We have reached out to regional partners, and we’ve made a formal request to the government to engage international assistance, including Scotland Yard,” he confirmed.

Rodney underscored the importance of thorough and accurate reporting in sensitive cases. “Social media is powerful, but it’s also prone to spreading fake news. We’ll continue to provide verified updates to ensure the public is well-informed without adding unnecessary distress,” he said.

The investigation remains ongoing, with police officials focusing on gathering evidence and interviewing persons of interest to identify those responsible for Michael’s death.

The beloved St. Peter MP was found dead on Tuesday spraking one of the largest murder investigations in the country’s history.
