Trinidad PM Tells Antigua’s Browne to Explain U.S. Visa Restrictions, Accuses CARICOM of Backing Maduro

Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar on Saturday told Antigua and Barbuda Prime Minister Gaston Browne to focus on explaining to his citizens why their U.S. visas were restricted, as she sharply criticized the Caribbean Community for what she described as alignment with Venezuela’s government.

In a statement posted on social media, Persad-Bissessar said Browne and Antigua and Barbuda’s ambassador to Washington, Ronald Sanders, should “worry less about my comments” and instead address the reasons behind the U.S. decision to impose partial entry restrictions affecting Antigua and Barbuda.

Her remarks formed part of a broader attack on CARICOM’s stance toward Venezuela, which she said amounted to support for dictatorship and drug trafficking under the bloc’s “zone of peace” policy.

“Trinidad and Tobago wants no part of that alignment,” Persad-Bissessar said, accusing CARICOM of aligning itself with Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, whom she alleged has imprisoned or killed thousands of political opponents.

She argued that the “zone of peace” narrative is a façade designed to push the American military out of the Caribbean region, thereby enabling Maduro to remain in power.

Persad-Bissessar also cited long-standing territorial tensions between Venezuela and Guyana, saying Caracas has threatened to invade Guyana for years and has recently made statements implying that Trinidad and Tobago is part of Venezuela.

Despite those threats, she said, CARICOM has chosen to support the Maduro government rather than confront what she described as regional security risks.

“My priority is in the best interests of the citizens of Trinidad and Tobago,” Persad-Bissessar said.

CARICOM has not issued an immediate response to the statement. The bloc has traditionally promoted the Caribbean as a “zone of peace,” emphasizing dialogue and non-intervention as guiding principles of regional diplomacy.

Persad-Bissessar’s comments are expected to heighten tensions within CARICOM at a time when relations with the United States and concerns over regional security remain under strain.

  1. I do not fully agree with the sentiments of Kamla Persad.
What i do agree with is that Caricom was and is more of an old boys club.
Their call for solidaroty is only when their individual interests are at stake of when an aligned party government is threatened.
They fight against each other on each and evey issue that doesn’t benefit them and when the shit hits the fan there is call about Caricom.
Caricom must represent the country and not the party in power.
Having said that, all of the islands of the region produce some lovely alcoholic brew.
Just give Kamla a few shots and she will sing like a canary.
Alcohol is nkt bad for her legs.
    It’s bad for her tongue!!!!!!
Though Gaston doesn’t drink, his brains is bad for his tongue.

  4. Woman, please shut the xxxx up. When Uncle Trump will have no further use you, you will be unceremoniously dumped like rotting garbage from a shot hole Country.

  5. She making sure she on the side of the winner in the upcoming war theater in Venezuela because come on everybody knows who’s gonna win….She securing stronger ties with the US and in the future they can gift Trinidad all the equipment it needs to fight off 6ixx,7even & 8ight gangs….

  6. The US came to the shores of Antigua 80 years ago when they were fighting Hitler’s submarines in the Atlantic. They needed a Station here and Antigua being ruled by the British said sure no problem..In this more recent tension in Venezuela we have the Chinese here working very closely with us and the US and China are not on any good terms… I 100% believe that is the only reason why PM Browne decided to stay in Neutral gear…

  7. The Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago is my hero for saying this:

“An organisation that chooses to disparage our greatest ally, the United States, but lends support to the Maduro narco-government headed by a dictator who has imprisoned and killed thousands of civilians and opposition members, as well as threatened two Caricom members, is one that has clearly lost its way,” Persad-Bissessar said in her statement.

I love this woman. Any person who say this is my hero. There are greedy idiots who think money and free oil is sufficient to forgive, forget and allow the tyranny of governments like Cuba, Venezuela, etcetera. All horrible leaders think is oh, they give us more than you, so allow them to be as evil to their own people and others as they like. This is the ignorance ABLP and their supporters preach.

Can someone with her contactd tell her thanks? We Antiguans and Barbudans celebrate you PM of Trinindad and Tobago.

  8. This back and forth war of words only serves to prolonged this rift. Once again, sometimes silence is the best response. The Trinidad and Tobago PM is emboldened, energized and inspired because she has the US on her side while we are still at a loss as to the real reasons why this visa proclamation was necessary.

  9. Why she don’t hush her flecking mouth. That’s why these bigger countries feel they can ALWAYS bullshit us, because we are not loyal to CARICOM. As we can see, it is still coming back to us small islands being a burden. Tell me. If Vere Cornwall Bird Sr. (Pa Pa Bird) was still alive in this 268 time, do you think he would allow TRUMP to do what he wants to us? i think the answer is a resounding NO!!!! Gaston right. I don’t think he’s saying Maduro is right to smuggle drugs and kill people and the likes. I think his message is that we are ALL Caribbean people, and we should learn to stand with each other and not continue to allow ourselves to be bullied. We are too divided. Plenty of us want to lay blame on the PM of this country, but we all know by now it’s not about no VISA or CBI or CIP…..

  10. Venezuela has done some good for Antigua but it is a fact that Maduro is a dictator who fraudulently rigs elections so he can stay in power and suppress Venezuelans. We cannot turn a blind eye to that and only look at what Maduro has done for us. That is short sighted. Gaston has been loudly supportive of Venezuela and the result is these new travel restrictions. He has suddenly gone quiet on Venezuela and we all know why. He is surely learning that he and Antigua are ants in a world of giants and we have no power whatsoever. USA makes one paper Proclamation to include us on a restricted travel list and we are properly screwed and Gaston has to immediately reverse course and comply with US demands. In the blink of an eye the Cuban Medical Brigade is gone after Gaston previously said No Way. Maduro certainly cannot help us with the travel restriction. Might is right.

  11. @Audley Phillip – You come with ALL this talk and you are still at a loss. Is it because you already know, but you don’t want to believe it’s that? Hypocrisy.

  12. The woman cannot be ignored and all parties need to come together and decide a way forward not individually speaking out of terms. Let caricom come together and speak. One person speaking for himself to reference others is dictatorship.

  13. Hard times are coming.
Unlike T&T’s PM, Caricom PMs do NOT act in the best interest of their citizens. In fact, they do not care at all.

  14. In the big picture of things, the Miss Passaud is correct. Yes, you have some petty back and forth going on here, but in the big picture of things, she is absolutely correct.

One, she is looking out for her people as she stated. Second by the large silence of many of the Caribbean nations on the Maduro/US fallout, that’s a sign of them picking a side, and GB and many other carribean leaders has in fact picked a side, by many of their soft or silent response, and that side is Maduro.
That is as clear as daylight.

So if you make a stance, you make a stance, but one thing you cannot do, like GB &co did, is to try and and straddle the fence and pretend that you didn’t actually made a stance for Maduro.

Their hypocrisy has caught up to them, and I have called it out many of times on this forum, criticizing GB for his weak-fence response about, oh, ” we are friends to all and enemy of none”. Pure garbage response that is, when we all know that you were directly asked in your meetings with Rubio and the US military personnel that you had a meeting with here in Antigua.

You were directly asked to pick a side, and we all know that.. No one is meeting with Washington in person, just to go there and talk about the weather.
These are highly diplomatic meetings, where favors are asked in secret, and GB was asked directly who he stood with in this Venezuela/US standoff, and he clearly stood with Maduro, but he was too coward to come back and tell the Antigua people, so he came up with this useless phrase, bout ” we are friends to all and enemy to none”.

So the PM of Trinidad is absolutely correct.

That’s the explanation for the fallout with US and their Visa, because that’s where trump can hurt us, and he did.

So have the guts and tell the people the truth GB, but instead you punked out again claiming you and your so-called Embassador was caught off guard with your pants down.
You didn’t get caught with your hands down. You knew what you did and said in those meetings with Rubio.

And one more thing..I think what happened in the meeting with the Commander of the southern command a few months ago, is that he kind of hinted to you that he wasn’t on board with Trump and this entire Venezuela thing, and you followed his cue I also think Trump found out that something was said to deter your favorable response of the US strikes, so the commander resigned immediately.
From the way things have played out, I think that’s what really happened.

So just come out and tell the people the truth..but I don’t think you have the spine for it, because staying in power is more important to you than some US visa.

  15. You need to get rid of the CUBAN DOCTORS inTRINIDAD AND TOBAGO it is a THREAT to NATIONAL SECURITY to TRINIDAD and TOBAGO and the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.Also other CARICOM countries that support the COMMUNIST CUBA GOVERNMENT and the DICTATOR MADURO IN VENEZUELA need to get rid of the CUBAN DOCTORS.” VERBA SAPIENTIA”.
