St. John’s, Antigua and Barbuda — Prime Minister Gaston Browne has announced imminent action against unauthorized fencing blocking public access to Pensions Beach.

Speaking on Pointe FM, Browne revealed that acres of Crown Land have been improperly claimed by private entities without government permission.

According to Browne, the facility in question is associated with Desmond Charles and Algernon Serpent Watts, who have built on government property without holding any lease or ownership.

The Prime Minister stated, “They have no lease; they have no ownership of the land. So it’s Crown Land.”

Browne highlighted that the unauthorized expansion, led by the individuals leasing the facility, has encroached upon an additional five acres of land.

This expansion includes a fence that obstructs access to a portion of Pensions Beach, a move Browne deemed “totally unacceptable.”

“It’s interesting that those who rightfully criticize others for blocking access to our beaches are now doing the same. That is against the law,” Browne remarked.

He emphasized that the fence violates regulations, which prohibit any barrier within 100 feet of the high-water mark.

The Development Control Authority (DCA) has already been tasked with addressing the issue. Browne mentioned that the DCA will formally instruct the responsible parties to remove the fence, stating, “If they don’t do so within the requisite time, DCA will go there and push it down because we want that beach to be available to all Antiguans and Barbudans as the law prescribes.”

To ensure public access and recreational opportunities, the government plans to designate part of the land for development while preserving a section as a public beach park.

“We will be making some lots available, probably quarter-acre lots, for Antiguans and Barbudans to develop B&B properties,” Browne explained. “We reserve probably about two acres of land to have a beach park so that people who visit Pensions Beach have a place to recreate and have adequate parking.”

  1. Yeah man I rate our prime minister for clearing that fence from beach at pensioners, you people at PLH in Barbuda our prime minister will get you for fencing the beach over there with racist buffer zone preventing even Barbuda council members from entering and even have the police arrested them, I am so happy because all them white investors blocking beach access will have Gaston breathing down their necks and luck he did not know what PLH did, hooray!

  2. Come on Serpant, lead by example! Remember, You should no longer be that gutter snipe who thinks & behaves as if no laws exists.

The people of St. George’s voted for you with the expectation of you characterizing yourself as an honorable gentleman obeying the laws of the land.

I hope you are not living by that cliche ” do as I say and not as I do “

  3. Bluddy Bloke, your Puppeteer has just pulled your string and you immediately jumped into action. We knew it already. Barrett has already completed his restaurant on the beach at Long Bay even though we heard that he would have to dismantle the structure just about the time it had started. Don’t worry, everyone will certainly have his day.

  4. Serpent has his Big People Party at Pensioners. How is he involved with that structure itself? Gaston”Hitler Stache” Browne is using Serpent’s name to gain mileage. Why you Gaston,do not go to all of the Beaches in Antigua and Barbuda.See where the white man have them all fenced to keep out the people.Just hoping your garden is well fenced to keep that goat out of it.

  5. It’s time Pensioners beach was cleared up that place has been an eyesore for years, it’s time this beach was beautified with plantings and nice structures and even vendors selling their wares as it’s one of the first beaches cruise ship passengers see as they sail into port, we can do much better! Also it’s time to beautify the land at Perry Bay road even just something as simple as leveling the bank up in such a way that it can be landscaped to read Welcome to Antigua with some prominent Landscaping design….

  6. Two wrongs dont make a right and NOT ONE fence should be blocking any access to ANY beach… that said, if it is 100 feet from the high water mark……how is it that Royalton Chic, just to name one, has not a fence, but the actual contruction starting at LESS than 50 feet from IT??

  7. Please don’t forget valley church we need proper access to this lovely beach not just on cruise ship days and bring put on curfew as to when to use it and told have to leave before gate closes. Pure nonesense!!!!! Time for a change!!!!!

  8. It is great to see the Prime Minister taking action on this. It is time the Government deal with these squatters.
