Over 45,000 licensed vehicles to about 25,000 drivers in Antigua and Barbuda

Antigua and Barbuda is witnessing a notable surge in vehicle numbers, as data from the Transport Board reveals a discrepancy between licensed vehicles and drivers.

Supervisor Josette Payne shared on Observer Radio that there are over 45,000 licensed vehicles compared to about 25,000 licensed drivers.

This trend, evident in the steady rise of licensed vehicles from 43,374 in 2021 to 44,275 in 2022 and 45,038 in 2023, indicates a significant increase in vehicle ownership and registration.

Payne noted that some businesses and individuals may own multiple vehicles, contributing to this disparity.

This rise raises concerns about infrastructure, the environment, and road safety.

  1. This stat only means one thing. They are looking for a way to introduce a new tax. Which is fine, but soo many taxes introduced in such a short space of time and salaries not increasing to match inflation and cost of living only means struggle.

  2. This does not compute. Either lots of people are driving without license, or we have lots of self driving vehicles on the road.

    • Observer needs to put a like button on comments. I was waiting for this one because that’s what I was thinking and it’s a fact.

  3. Get it right….the stats only mean that there are many unlicensed drivers in Antigua. At the end of the day a person can only drive one vehicle at a time so with the increased congestion then the stats speak for itself. Police go do your work and seek out these unlicense drivers.

  4. No consiparcy theory here peeps.

Why doesnt this mean prosperity? Companies are purchasing new vehicles, Husband and wife now each have a car but perhaps its only in one of thier names ?

    • Even if all the 45000 cars in antigua were registered in one person’s name you would still have 25000 drivers. A difference of 20000, these stats are definitely suspect.

    • They are not speaking of owners of vehicles here. They are speaking of license drivers.. A owner can only have one license even he have several vehicles in his/ her name.

  5. Remember we also have a lot of unregistered car rentals around. It’s easy to buy 2 vitz or 2 fit and start a weekend rental Ting! Lots of them have A plates too not necessarily R.

  6. The wording of this article is creating some very necessary concerns. It mentions ‘disparity’ and discrepancy between the two figures. Is there a law or rehulation that says they should be the same.
Not every one with a drivers license own a vehicle, conversely, some persons owns multiple vehicles. I have two. My neighbor has two.
A Rent A Car company with 20 cars all registered in one name. A co worker of mine drives one car, but his wife’s and 2 sons cars are unregistered in his name becsuse he bought them.
I am sure that we have all seen houses with like 2 adults living there and 4 cars parked outside.
    Necessary drama

    • Finally some one with common sense! It’s the amount of vehicles is concerning considering the country’s size and infrastructure. Unlicensed drivers is a real issue but not one that can be explained by these numbers alone. This is just them laying the foundation for another tax introduction or tax increase. Sadly there is no foundation being layed for salary increase or cost of living compensation. The future may not be as tragic as ppl tend to say. But we will always be struggling because our ” leaders ” will always seek new ways to leach off the hard working citizens.

  7. @ Denden it is so obvious that it is elementary, unregistered car rentals will account for the disparity of the number of drivers to the number of vehicles registered.

  8. In 1954 I purchased a Vesper motor Scooter. AG464. All vehicles and owner names on a black board above the old Post Office on Thames Street. That included commercial vehicles, cars, tricks, farm machines and motor bikes.

Progress? No most of the new vehicles are 2006 vintage and are covered by 3rd party liability only. Most duty free?

  9. If you are going to license a vehicle don’t you need a driver’s
License? This could mean that some people have more than one vehicle.

  10. I’m sure all the vehicles on the roadside for years with the red X still in their system

  11. High time something is done aboutthe overrun of vehicles in this place.
    But 45000?! Just that?!
Can’t be; for at rush hour, how vehicles stuff up all the roads them, one could draw the conclusion that more vehicles are in this country than people.
    Aryou sure aryou count rite?
