The government has announced a sweeping national beautification initiative that will see more than 400 government buildings repainted in the coming months, beginning with state offices in the capital, St. John’s.

Director General of Communications Maurice Merchant said the Cabinet has approved the allocation of a “sizable sum of money for the painting or the repainting of all government buildings in Antigua and Barbuda,” describing the move as part of the administration’s wider transformation and modernization agenda.

He noted that the effort will start with government-owned buildings in St. John’s and is expected to expand nationwide.

“It is anticipated that the private sector will follow suit in repainting their buildings,” Merchant said during Thursday’s post-Cabinet media briefing.

The initiative complements a new Building-Repair Fund approved by the Cabinet to finance the restoration and maintenance of public offices.

Merchant said the fund will focus on addressing the condition of the more than 400 properties occupied by government agencies across the country.

“The Cabinet agreed that there will be the establishment of this fund to look at the entire reconstruction and repairs of government buildings,” he explained.

Officials say the repainting campaign and repair fund form part of broader preparations to enhance the nation’s appearance and infrastructure ahead of the 2026 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), which Antigua and Barbuda will host.

  1. And all of this needs to be done before the CHOGM Meeting we will host. I will not look good if our guest come and see the dilapidated state our Government offices are. Since they have been build they have not received not one coat of paint. Check the buildings forming the government complex. They are black from mildew. Obsoletely unacceptable. Sometime I wonder why it is we do not care about maintaining our properties and workplaces with some pride. And I will bat this one for the workers at CMC. Has anyone ever gone in to the building? It is beyond disgusting. The workers are really tolerating a lot. Not like the Postal Workers who strike the minute their workplace is not worthy of a work place. I’m sure if the Central Board of Health would inspect that building they will declare it unsuitable for working in it. And send all the staff home. But the sad thing is the government is now planning in spending millions of dollars to buy another dilapidated building called Ken’s Club for a whapping amount of $9 million. The same government that accused the UPP of not getting value for money when they purchase Food City from the Winter Family. All that is going on here is friends helping friends out of financial problems. The same thing happen with The Lux Cinema Building. All these things are happening and our Opposition is holding protest actions on vehicles that were bought at the right price but just not according the right procedures. Other then that their is nothing criminal going on here. Just a breach of policy and procedure. There is no theft. But that happens when you have a clueless opposition. Let Pringle ask in Parliament why it is government can find money to buy Ken’s Club but no money to repair CMC main building. In which staff have to work in deplorable conditions. And where vagrants have made it their home. I leave it her because lots to say about the state of our government buildings. Please people look at the hospital just the outside. Why don’t a group of contractors go there and inspect the building. Make a list of things that need urgent repair and present this to the government for consideration. Publish this list in the newspaper and we’ll see how fast they will react on it. I took it upon my self to do such exercise starting from the airport to see what will be the first and last impression of the thousands of guests that will be visiting here during the conference. And if Allen Stanford could see what has become of his master piece, he would cry. The receiver is not able or not interested in keeping the surroundings neat as when they first got it. What was a lust for eye to see the flora around the airport is now just bush and more bush and weed. The road is full with potholes. I mean this is our front door. The government should take some pride in having it maintained. Even if they need to subsidize the receivers in doing so. It is in the country’s interest. In the end you are providing work for some 50 grounds men and women. The value of our tourist pleasure of their appreciation of entering/departing Antigua with such an impression is priceless. When traveling to Singapore and Malaysia I was so impressed how neat their airport surrounding and not only the airport but their entire country was. I wish someday our country could be half of that. Just a wish. Mr. PM, please take pride in this area. And Mr. Fernandes as Tourism Minister you also should take note of this area.
