POINTE XPRESS: Kenisha Whyte, valedictorian of the University of the West Indies (UWI) Five Islands Campus Lifelong Learning Unit’s 2024 graduating class, celebrated her achievements and thanked her supporters.

An inmate at His Majesty’s Prison (HMP), Whyte excelled through UWI’s Seeds of Hope Programme, which grants scholarships to inmates. Launched in 2021, this program promotes rehabilitation through education.

In her speech, Whyte reflected on the challenges of studying with limited time and confronting stigma, describing education as a path to transformation.

“I am a symbol of resilience and the power of education,” she said, attributing her success to the Lifelong Learning Unit and HMP’s commitment to rehabilitation.

Sixteen HMP residents graduated this year, with Dr. Curtis Charles commending them for their perseverance, and Paula C.M. Lee noting that 346 students received certificates, with Brittney Gomes earning the Harvard Credential of Readiness.

Whyte achieved top marks in Cyber Security and Strategic Human Resource Management, with a 94% average.
