A 29-year-old man from Ottos has been sentenced to 17 months in prison for illegally possessing a firearm and ammunition.
Otis Jackson was sentenced on Monday by Acting Chief Magistrate Ngaio Emanuel after pleading guilty to both charges. He received one year and five months for the firearm offence and a concurrent six-month sentence for ammunition possession.
Police arrested Jackson on December 11 after stopping his vehicle during routine patrols in the Tindale Road area. A search uncovered an empty 9mm Smith & Wesson pistol and seven rounds of ammunition.
Jackson entered guilty pleas when he appeared in court on December 22 and was remanded to His Majesty’s Prison, where he spent Christmas in custody while awaiting sentencing.

Why is it when someone does bullshit and pleads guilty in Court they are given a light sentence and it always runs concurrently what the hell wrong with consecutively. You people are the reason they keep messing up
A gun related charge should warrant a minimum of 2 years behind bars and a year for each bullet.
Someone found with a gun is always on a mission to kill. People like that, are needed off the streets
Mugshots and fingerprints should now become a must, if we are truly determine to turn this crime situation around. Mr Commissioner we need to start building a strong database, while at the same time exposing these lowlife to the public.
I love when people write with confidence, from a place of little to no knowledge.
There are sentencing guidelines, sentences are not pulled out a hat or on a whim. These guidelines are for the Eastern Caribbean jurisdiction, not just Antigua.
You get a lighter sentence if you plead guilty as you have chosen not to waste the Court’s time. You also get a lighter sentence if it is a first time offence. There are other mitigating and aggravating factors that are taken into consideration.
Consecutive or concurrent is a consideration informed by the guidelines and the surrounding circumstances.
Fingerprints and pictures are taken of everyone charged with a criminal offence, regardless of the seriousness of the criminal act.
The sentencing for been caught with an unlicensed firearm or weapon is biased. Going back to the guy Nathaniel from Roadhouse – a business person until now with these recent cases, the sentencing us all over the place.
@Visionary you’re unto them
Concurrently means at the same time verses CONSECUTIVELY which means one after the other without interruption.
But hey, lady justice always spoke with a blindfold holding an unbalanced scale.
