Students from the Ottos Comprehensive School gained valuable insights into seafood safety, fish health, and nutrition during an educational visit to the Fisheries Division today.
The second-form Home Economics class participated in an interactive session aimed at reinforcing lessons on seafood handling and its benefits in a balanced diet.
Upon arrival at the Point Wharf Fisheries Complex, the students were welcomed by Chief Fisheries Officer Ian Hosford and Senior Fisheries Officer Hilroy Simon. They were then led to the conference room, where they were introduced to the vital role of seafood in food security, health, and nutrition.
During the session, students learned to identify fresh fish using key indicators, including clear eyes, red gills, and firm flesh. Experts also highlighted proper storage methods and the importance of hygiene in seafood handling to prevent contamination and ensure food safety.
The visit provided an opportunity for students to engage in discussions on local fisheries, sustainable fishing practices, and the nutritional benefits of seafood, such as its high-quality protein, omega-3 fatty acids, and essential vitamins and minerals.
By the end of the session, students expressed a greater appreciation for the seafood industry and its role in daily nutrition. The Fisheries Division continues to support educational outreach programmes, ensuring young learners develop a deeper understanding of seafood health and nutrition.
