A name change is in the pipeline for The Royal Police Force of Antigua & Barbuda if the opposition United Progressive Party (UPP) is elected at the next general election.

Speaking at his party’s recent Vision Forum, leader Harold Lovell said the name will change from the police “force” to the Royal Police Service of Antigua & Barbuda.

“Some may say that it is cosmetic, but the fact is that it is a new mindset that we need to create to serve and to protect; not to just use force against people,” Lovell said while speaking on the problem of high crime.

“And with the police service, a new mindset is what we will seek to cultivate where the police and the community will be working together to eradicate crime in our community,” he added.

The opposition party said increasing punishment for crime and giving the police “more weapons” alone will not solve the problem.

Antigua and Barbuda has recorded 20 murders so far for 2017.

  1. So in 2017 the UPP proposes a name change for the Royal Police Force in Antigua to replace the word force with the word service. The Royal Police Service. Isn’t there another word that needs to be removed oh wise ones? Am I missing some thing here. How about the Antigua and Barbuda Police service.

    • This is a good extension on the name you’ve suggested; I like it.

Lovell’s name change idea I must say is an excellent one though. It may seem simplistic at first glance but there is much in a name, and it is a good start for any other reforms and training etc.

    • They should remove “Royal” while they are at it… they aren’t policing the plantations anymore but them again some people

    • Oh my , my FOOT, DO YOU HAVE A BETTER SOLUTION? YOU ARE EITHER OF THE PROBLEM OR PART OF THE SOLUTION? WHAT ARE YOU?

  2. Yeah…so a Pig is in the Pen…some people call it Pig, others called it Hog…does it really change the behaviour and attitudes of the Pig/Hog ? I was a Police Officer in Antigua/Barbuda from March, 1963 to July, 1972,,, at that time Some people talked about changing the NAME from Police Force to Police SERVICE…I am talking from Experience…To me it does not make a difference…We have to dig deeper, than a Name Change…,
