Opposition Senator Alex Browne has sharply criticised the government over what he described as the poor state of roads across Antigua and Barbuda, calling for immediate action to address the situation.
Speaking during the budget debate in the Senate on Tuesday, Senator Browne outlined numerous examples of deteriorating infrastructure, including key community roads and routes to tourist attractions.
He described Paradise Road in Piccadilly, his hometown, as “a minefield” that causes discomfort for drivers and damages vehicles. “When I think of paradise, I think of smooth roads, not ones that make you thankful for having all your teeth intact,” he said.
Tourism was a key focus of Senator Browne’s remarks. He pointed to the access road leading to Devil’s Bridge, a popular tourist site, as an example of how road disrepair is harming Antigua’s image.
“Taxi drivers dread taking visitors there because the roads are so bad,” he said, adding that the condition of such routes undermines efforts to promote the country as a premier destination.
Major highways also came under scrutiny. Senator Browne criticised the state of All Saints Road and the airport access road, which he described as “a disaster” during wet weather.
“Large potholes that resemble craters are not what residents or visitors should have to contend with,” he added.
The senator directed his criticism at the Public Works Department, urging officials to take immediate steps to repair roads across the country.

He also highlighted the issue of newly paved roads being left in disrepair after infrastructure work, describing the delays in fixing them as “unacceptable.”
“We need roads that support economic activity and daily life, not ones that destroy people’s cars,” he said.
Senator Browne’s remarks reflect growing frustration among residents over the state of the country’s infrastructure.
He argued that poor road conditions not only inconvenience drivers but also tarnish the nation’s image and limit opportunities for development.
He concluded by calling on Public Works Minister Maria Browne to address the issue urgently. “The people deserve better, and the government must act,” he said.

George Wehner son taking your place.
Senator Browne thank you for pointing this out to them, they need to fix the roads, this is very hard on us all, from high costs in vehicle repairs and so much discomfort in driving basic roads that people use on a regular basis, and APUA needs to plan better and stop diffing up the Dyam road everytime they fix it or pave a new one.
Its like they just wait for road repairs or a new road to go dig up, and they leave all the waste material or left overs right there. its a terrible hazard to everyone and an eyesore as well.
APUA workers, do ya dyam job properly !
TA TA ALEX ( according to Sen Colin Browne ). You would NOT be running next election.
I drove past a particularly treacherous strip of road. On the side of the road there were numerous men. Sitting on their ass, staring at the potholes and grazing like cattle. Who are “they” that are urged to fix the roads?
Secondly the other day certain government officials announced an “app” through which drivers could identify damaged roadway. That is totally retarded. Maybe they should implement an app where people can identify a strip of road that is actually acceptable.
Politrix aside, it is good that this is being brought up….again. I’m Antiguan, living in the Midwest USA and a patron was chatting up my spouse one day. Asked him where he was from upon hearing the accent. Hearing he was from Antigua, he got really excited saying they were there a few weeks prior and it is an absolutely beautiful country, especially the beaches, but the roads were terrible. Not only the major roads, but those in the villages and newly developed areas as well should be made a priority. When there is heavy rainfall, many cannot leave or get back to their homes due to severe flooding.
