Opposition Leader Supports Amendments to National Statistics Bureau Act

Opposition Leader Jamale Pringle has expressed strong support for the National Bureau of Statistics Bill, describing it as a significant step forward for Antigua and Barbuda. Pringle highlighted the bill’s alignment with international treaties and obligations, which he believes will enhance the country’s statistical framework and bring it in line with global standards.

Pringle acknowledged the challenges faced in obtaining reliable statistical data in Antigua and Barbuda and throughout the Caribbean. He shared a personal anecdote about meeting researchers at the Miami airport who struggled to acquire the necessary data for their studies in Antigua. This bill, he noted, aims to address such difficulties by ensuring that data collected is accurate, well-documented, and easily accessible.

“I am pleased to see that we are moving towards ensuring that what we have in Antigua and Barbuda is on par with what is available around the world,” Pringle stated. He emphasized the importance of having sound data to support research and informed decision-making, rather than relying on speculation.

Pringle did seek clarification on Clause 10 of the explanatory memorandum, which discusses provisions for expanding the bureau’s funding base through additional property sources. He called for more detail on the government’s plans to implement this aspect, expressing concern over the clause’s vagueness.

Despite his call for clarification, Pringle reiterated his support for the bill, recognizing its potential to improve strategic planning and decision-making processes based on reliable data. “I’m not here to object to this bill because I think it’s necessary and can do wonders,” he concluded.

The National Bureau of Statistics Bill, aimed at harmonizing statistical legislation with international standards, promises to make significant strides in the collection, documentation, and accessibility of data in Antigua and Barbuda.

  2. What an ASS !!!! This Guy DOES NOT understand the issues. There is NO Opposition party in Antigua. What a DISGRACE .

  3. A word of advice to MP Pringle. Do not support anything ABLP puts forward until all areas, the good, bad and ugly of it have been scrutinized. ABLP is never to be trusted and as you now see ALWAYS have ulterior motives.
