Opposition Leader Pringle calls on Browne Administration to render post-hurricane aid to Cuba
In a pointed challenge to the Gaston Browne Administration’s apparent inaction, Opposition Leader Jamale Pringle is calling for immediate humanitarian assistance to Cuba, as its government and people grapple with widespread power outages and infrastructure damage in the wake of Hurricane Oscar.
The devastating combination of an already fragile electrical grid and the hurricane’s impact has plunged much of Cuba into darkness, prompting the United Progressive Party (UPP) to press for a robust response.
“As our Caribbean neighbour and longtime benefactor, Cuba is in dire need of immediate support, and we have yet to hear of any concrete plans for aid or assistance from the Browne Administration,” Pringle states, highlighting what he describes as a troubling silence from official channels.
The Opposition Leader recalls Cuba’s decades-long role as a cornerstone ally in Caribbean development, noting, in particular, its contributions to the local healthcare sector.
“Over the past 40 years, many of our medical professionals have benefitted from scholarships to study in Cuba, significantly strengthening our healthcare system,” Pringle says, while Cuban medical personnel have been “integral to our public health services.”
In a strategic reminder of diplomatic obligations, Pringle underscores Cuba’s historical reliability during regional crises.
“When Caribbean nations faced tough times, Cuba was one of the few countries that consistently offered support, whether in healthcare, education, sports, or infrastructure development,” he notes.
In light of this, the UPP is calling on the Browne Administration to immediately mobilize relief efforts. “Cuba and its people should be reassured of the unwavering friendship and solidarity of the people of Antigua and Barbuda, especially at a time like this,” Pringle reminds Prime Minister Browne.

@ Pete: It was obvious that Shuggy sees Pringle as a weak leader, but he is doing it deceptively. At this moment he is perhaps towing the party line just to create some healing in

Last evening on Knight show, Shuggy made a big fool of himself by saying what is happening in UPP does not have any impact the government & the country by extension.

Why do we have to lace all our commentary with so much vitriol? I see nothing wrong with the leader of the opposition asking the Prime Minister to provide some relief to Cuba in light of their current difficulties. Cuba has come to the aid of many of our countries and it is only fitting that we apply ourselves. There is absolutely no need to berate him.

If ALP couldn’t offer any assistance at all to a very small population like Antigua and Barbuda’s, how on this planet are they going to do anything for Cuba? They stole some $3.5M worth of materials that were given to the Nation after the passage of a previous hurricane. The St. Kitts/Nevis Prime Minister even berated Gaston for not being able to assist us after he,Gaston, had previously boasted that we had the best economy in the region with double figure growth rate and he lapped his tail like a defeated dog.Is Mr. Pringle the problem? @Sharon Patriot Lycorish because Pringle’s press release is just like a photo op. He needs to do more to establish and project himself as a real leader. His advisors like Wehner, Alister and Giselle are failing him miserably.
I may be speaking out of school but as I study Antigua as a potential alternative to the u.s. it seems to me that the Antiguan government needs to focus it’s efforts and resources on Antigua. I’ve toured areas in St. John on Google maps only to find poverty not merely appalling but literally subhuman.

@ Ms. Lycorish – Cuba no longer even has electricity, I believe that Cuba should consider attempting to provide the most basic humanitarian aid to their citizens first.

You Pringle should stop complaining and take trips abroad and speak to international media to bring attention to the plight of Cuba, but you fit yourself in a position whose show doesn’t fit you as leader, so you holding back the advancement of a nation, a more articulate person with institutional knowledge can fulfil such role, take Franz for example or tabor.
