Leader of the Opposition, Hon. Jamale Pringle, has voiced strong criticisms of the government following the delivery of the Throne Speech by Governor General Sir Rodney Williams. Addressing key issues outlined in the speech, Pringle questioned the government’s progress on infrastructure and its ability to translate economic improvements into tangible benefits for the people of Antigua and Barbuda.
Pringle described the Throne Speech as repetitive, highlighting projects that had already been announced in previous years. He pointed to the ongoing water crisis as a glaring example of the administration’s failure to deliver meaningful results despite repeated promises.
“After 10 years, we’re still battling the water issue,” Pringle remarked. “The government has established several reverse osmosis plants, yet we’re facing the same challenges. It’s clear the problem lies not just with production but with distribution, as they now talk about laying new pipes.”
The Opposition Leader proposed a structured plan to tackle water and road infrastructure issues, emphasizing the need for zoning to systematically address re-piping and drainage. He criticized the lack of proper planning and consultation, stating that poor drainage continues to damage roads and undermine public infrastructure investments.
On the issue of economic performance, Pringle acknowledged the reduction of the debt-to-GDP ratio from 104% in 2014 to 62% but questioned its impact on ordinary citizens. He argued that while lower debt is commendable, it has not translated into improved living conditions or expanded social programs.
“We hear a lot of GDP growth figures, but when you speak to the ordinary man on the street, they’re not experiencing the growth the government boasts about,” Pringle said. He added that the government’s apparent fiscal space has not been utilized to introduce new social programs or infrastructure projects that directly benefit residents.
Looking ahead to the upcoming budget presentation, Pringle outlined his expectations for a clear strategy to create jobs, improve infrastructure, and resolve long-standing issues such as the water crisis. He called on the government to provide concrete plans to move the nation forward.
When asked about the state of the United Progressive Party (UPP) amidst recent high-profile resignations, Pringle dismissed concerns, asserting the party’s resilience. “The United Progressive Party is still standing firm and will continue to advocate for the people of Antigua and Barbuda,” he affirmed.
The Throne Speech, traditionally a broad outline of the government’s priorities, has reignited debates over the administration’s performance and its ability to address pressing national concerns.
