Eastern Caribbean Civil Aviation Authority (ECCAA) is paper technical.

With all the trouble and violations in and around the management of Antigua’s main International Airport, it is difficult to accept that the Civil Aviation Regulatory Authority is located in the island.

Just weeks ago, a privately owned tower, itself a violation, was a failed demolition, attempted by an inexperienced dynamite rock buster from one of our quarries.

Located right next to the ECCAA headquarters, in the airport compound, without any authorization from the Director of Airport Security & Safety, no public advice to anyone, not the Fire Department, the Police, and with absolutely no authority from the Public officers responsible for use of explosives, the demolition failed twice.

To date there has been no inquiry, no investigation, no naming or blaming which all Security systems connected to Aviation demand.

Overlooking violations has now become normalized at VCBiA, where the young persons engaged in Aviation are no longer rigorously taught the Rules, & Regulations of the regional, and international organizations, of which Antigua & Barbuda are members.

Further, Transparency, the third leg on which Aviation safely depends has been disbanded in Antigua as a whole.

Replacement of Rules with personal convenience, self-enrichment schemes, and sheer downright dishonesty has become normalized under the distant and uninvolved attitude of the technicians at ECCAA, and the Ministry of Aviation.

Late 2024 the sudden disappearance of the substantive Director of Safety & Security of ABAA left many questions unanswered as the blanket was thrown over a serious breach of security, exposing unauthorized operators illegally accessing the Secure zone of the airport to conduct business. Operators who demanded an investigation were slammed with their business seized and threatened with closure.

Meanwhile a big blanket was thrown over the violation.

ECCAA was just across the road, now located at the VCBIA, they were asked nothing, did nothing. One would think that the host island of ECCAA would be a shining example of Aviation Security, Safety and Airport Operations, a model on which systems could be tested and disbursed to the member territories.

The regional Aviation Authority like other regional bodies is aloof from the problems their technical advice is expected to help resolve, and the non-interference clause which prevents any island state from involving itself in the affairs of other islands seems to also govern ECCAA.

The ability of the airport management to walk across the road to ECCAA should be considered a great opportunity to access immediate help re Rules & Regulations, and should not be wasted.

Sit-down desk jobs are making our people lazy at observing difficulties and creating ways of correcting the impasse.

Gone are the days of Airport Operators Committee meetings every month, where all the stakeholders of the airport as demanded by ICAO, gathered to maintain the integrity of airport management by knowledgeable personnel, committed to the international obligations of the authorities that govern Aviation globally.

VCBIA needs to get back on the platform of excellence it had maintained for years on what Allen Stanford called our rinky-dink airport.

  1. This once again demonstrates that there are no journalists in this country. I have also been waiting for an update. We have also heard nothing further about the incident where a vehicle ploughed into ABDF soldiers. Not a word. What a country.

  2. Just like Darell Matthews and Micheal freeland overlook that the Powells playing field belongs to the community not the gang of cricketers that control it … the gate is always lock and is only open when they have games .. this is a sad country .. people are like mafias in this place .. Darell Mathew told me the people said I can use the side openings, “joke thing” ..meanwhile the cricket gang and gang leaders have a key so they get full access to the gate entrance..

  3. Coulda, shoulda, woulda, didn’t. Did some Good Friday Jewmbee suddenly wake up with the question, “Now how could I stir up some more trouble for these so-called Christ worshippers mourning on this Good Friday. Felt that strong earthquake just now??? Wake up, my people!!

  4. What else y’all expect? 😂. This government only gets full onboard when big money is involved.
    😂

This is the government you chose voters, one that scheme and scheme in the darkness of secrecy.

The word transparency has never come across these peoples faces to even know what it means.

When you run a country, and have the people that are in vital positions only because of who they know, what else you expect writer?

    Huuumm.

And corruption doesn’t always have to do with money, it just means that the thing is impure, and this government is way way far from purity.

    Full a corruption.

  5. These comments suggest that there is no transparency or accountability in Government. Wouldn’t these issues be raised in parliament by His Majesty’s loyal opposition? The last time I checked, keeping government honest is one of the main function of parliamentarians on the other side. That’s why we elect our Parliamentarians. So “ra raing” on electronic media just doesn’t cut it.
