The Unrecognized UWI Faculty
The spread of the Revelation of Rastafari throughout the Caribbean and Africa can be due to the graduates and others learning at the University of the West Indies, Jamaica campus. The Caribbean saw the spread of the tradition of Rastafari with the UWI graduate and later Professor Walter Rodney’s dissertation in The Groundings with My Brothers’ where he introduced the world to the Rastafari Brethren of Jamaica.
His colleagues and students at the University of the West Indies whom the Revelation enlightened departed to their island homes, some after graduation, others by forced interruption of their studies. It is held by some, the latter with the cooperation of US operatives, who felt dreadfully threatened by bearded, dreadlocks young men.
The seventies were a time of change globally, and the youth of all colors including those of the English speaking Caribbean broke away seeking higher heights. Prof. Walter Rodney introduced Rastafari thinking into his studies in Tanzania, and maybe that accounts for the largest community of Rastafari located in South Africa.
Rastafari, are unapologetic fundamentalists whose ability to apply consciousness of the Revelation of Rastafari to building a people, with all the attributes of levity (life), their own black God, His Imperial Majesty Haile Selassie I: language (cocking up the queen’s English); diet/vegan (ital); music (heartbeat drum/rocksteady – reggae); dress code (covered); ethics (I& I); growing a lion’s mane (locks), bringing a new spiritual protective role to the Imperial Guard of Ethiopia in the West.
In rebuilding the African in the islands post slavery and colonialism, Rastafari introduced the Categorical “NO” which for 400 years could not be conceived or uttered by enslaved Africans. Rastafari taught the youth, ‘let your yea be yea, and you no be no’, and more importantly all Rastafari learned to own, after 400 years of being owned. Armed with Peace & Love, the Bible with the psalms of David, and graduating from the school of government/police persecution, Rastafari was revealed to the Caribbean by students of the University of the West Indies, before spreading the Revelation to Africa.
The time has come for the grassroots of our islands to oncemore become the focus of our educated elite, where ancient African concepts of inclusion take root, creating communities which operate as a single cell.
The time has come for the University of the West Indies to claim is role in the disbursement of the tribes throughout the world, Rastafari energizing the people with heartbeat rhythms and good vibes, clean living and wholesome food, loving Jah and doing good, upholding the highest principles,of Peace & Love.
