OPINION: The Caribbean, Private Jet-Setting

1

By Makeda Mikael

The relative safety of the Caribbean offers a new type of jet-setting for the ultra-rich, who have long ceased using commercial travel and resorts, preferring to take their private or corporate jet to an FBO or secluded area of commercial airports.

Quick inbound processing and onto their helicopter they arrive in minutes aboard their private yacht, docked at a private location on the islands’ many secluded coves and jetties.

Antigua has for many years offered the privacy of hangaring the jets of the ultra wealthy in the Caribbean islands who would prefer the paparazzi not recording their aircraft registration and surmising on just who is aboard.

Being the host country to several billionaires having private island homes and yachts in and around Antigua & Barbuda their visitors also require a level of safety & security , which the ultra-rich are accustomed to receiving, and also which their insurance companies and royal regulations demand.

It is in response to this demand, and the popularity of the peaceful small islands that a development plan for Antigua & Barbuda is being designed, to offer the ultimate safety and security for private and corporate aircraft in the Eastern Caribbean Jet-setters, hangaring their aircraft in Antigua.

Antigua Hangars Inc. empowered by the recognition by the Government, that all airport lands within the area designated as the airport must be owned by the crown or Airport Authority, is now freed to develop their plans with the government owning the lands.

It is not a well known fact that insurance companies which assure Aviation will not cover dubious situations which are not in keeping with international regulations (ICAO), and private ownership of lands within an international airport, without Registering a Difference with ICAO is definitely without precedents.

This new thrust of intelligent policy by Government seeking restore the airport lands, now opens up the possibilities of development of Runway 10 Peninsular, to serve the wealthiest persons and their aircraft in a private and safe enclave of Aviation expertise.

Please find below the preliminary development plans for Runway 10 being presented to the Government and people of Antigua & Barbuda by Antigua Hangars Inc.

It is important to note that the airport architects presenting these preliminary plans are the same who initially conceptualized Stanford Development Company plans for Runway 10.

The end of the peninsular overlooking the bay, Jumby & the Northshore islands will be dedicated to FBO Support Services with emphasis on Barbuda , offering hangarage, small maintenance and other support services to Barbuda aircraft in Antigua.

The Government’s plan for an MRO (maintenance/repair/overhaul) will require the entire runway to be free of parked aircraft for the freedom of movement of large aircraft turning into their MRO.

Additionally the Cleaning and Service area is easily available for drop-in small aircraft requiring quick turn services.

The developments are planned to encourage and facilitate aviation entrepreneurs.
