Harold Lovell Eyeing City East? PM Browne Speculates on UPP's Next Move

In what can only be described as a disheartening move for progressive minded supporters of the United Progressive Party (UPP), Harold Lovell’s re-entry into active politics is both baffling and deeply disappointing.

After a staggering 10 losses out of 12 attempts at political office, one would think the message from the electorate has been resoundingly clear: Antigua and Barbuda is ready to move on.

Lovell’s political career is littered with underwhelming performances, electoral defeats, and lackluster

leadership. His most recent run left him visibly worn, age has not been kind, and the physical and mental toll of repeated political failure shows not only in his demeanor but in his increasingly out-of-touch messaging.

What is even more troubling is the apparent strategy (if you can call it that): to recycle the same failed leadership, in the hopes that different geography might yield different results.

Let’s be frank—Lovell was a failure as Minister of Finance. His tenure was marked by economic stagnation, poor fiscal management, and policies that did little to lift the nation or inspire

investor confidence. Under his watch, the country floundered, and the aftershocks of those years still haunt the UPP’s credibility on economic issues.

For a party struggling to shake off its image of irrelevance, doubling down on the very face of that decline is political malpractice.
Worse still, this is not the first time Lovell has bowed out,he has resigned three times.

Each time, it was with great declarations of reflection, of making way for new leadership. Yet here we are again, watching a familiar face take up space instead of nurturing a new generation of leadership that could

actually challenge the well loved Anthony Smith and the ALP.

His new political move running in Sea View Farm and All Saints West is nothing short of desperate. After decades of failure in Fort Road and City East, what makes him think he can suddenly connect with an entirely new constituency from scratch? The residents of these areas deserve a leader who understands their needs, has built trust, and has fresh ideas, not a political veteran chasing relevance through relocation.
To make matters worse, Lovell’s leadership has always been

overshadowed by the overbearing presence of party chairman Gisele Isaac, who was often seen pulling the strings behind the scenes. This dynamic didn’t inspire confidence before, and it won’t inspire now.

This move is not just a personal misstep,it’s a symptom of a deeper dysfunction within the UPP. Rather than grooming young, dynamic leaders who can re-energize the base and speak to the future, the party seems trapped in a cycle of nostalgia and fear.

It is actively stifling internal growth, sending a clear message to ambitious newcomers: “Wait your turn… or don’t bother.”

Supporters of the UPP deserve better. Antigua and Barbuda deserves better. Harold Lovell’s comeback is not a symbol of resilience,it is a stubborn refusal to accept reality.

The political landscape is evolving, and clinging to the past will only ensure more electoral heartbreak.

The time has come for a full reckoning within the UPP. Recycling old candidates will not bring new results. If we are serious about defeating the ALP and offering a genuine alternative to the people, then we must invest in bold, young, visionary leaders, not retreat into the shadow of failed ones.

This is not just a criticism of one man,it is a wake-up call to an entire political party: Get it right, or get out of the way.CLICK HERE TO JOIN OUR WHAT’S APP GROUP

  1. nobody respects Pringle nor his poor and dunce leadership. UPP need 2 b honest n tap lie to people. If I was Pringle, me would just leave dem n their United Retrogressive Party- URP

  2. I find this quite funny. The ABLP should be cock-a-hoop Lovell is back since this is a sure seat for them yet they sound very concerned, your fear is being exposed, when are we going to hear from Dave Ray and his BUDDY Faithful National #1 with their regular diatribe

  3. Once again ABLP is trying to tell us how we feel in this Article. It’s getting tired. You need to start paying attention to the people of Antigua. After all you are in power, so why are you so upset with the move to Lovell. You should be jumping for joy if it was such a misstep.

It’s embarrassing to me that a football stadium of people on this island can be properly taken care of. 100,000 people, and the strife is overwhelming. Lets just look at crime for instances. All I hear it is better than most islands. Is that good enough, then you just wait till it is just like the worst islands. But then you would say you didn’t see it coming, while you are in you fancy car and big house. Give me a break please.

To the writer. Why dont you put your name at the bottom of the article. Don’t you think it would be appropriate to stand by it. Or are you getting paid to omit it?

  4. Ahh, just what is to be expected from ABLP. But pay them no mind because they have a big problem. Smith cannot declare himself to be part of ABLP because that immediately invokes a by election, a lawsuit then a “bang off”. Not to declare means, stay an Independent, then a “bang off” and total rejection by Gaston; he done. So the criers are out trying to demonize Lovell again and hope it works once again. IT WONT!!

  5. Some of the comments here aptly demonstrate why the UPP will never, ever again win an election in Antigua. Neither the leadership nor their supporters understand politics. This is a chess game. Any political party that does not seize any opportunity to hammer home their advantage when the occasion demands is stupid and not ready. The ABLP is a political animal – a political machine. One that is filled with experience, tradition and purpose. Of course they will make fun of this backward step by the UPP. But fear? Be afraid of what? A proven failure who has the record for election losses? An old, tired and failed politician, who led the UPP to defeat? All the UPP has done is give even more ammunition to the ABLP.

  6. If old robin, and molwyn and cutie and melford can still a hold on to power, Lovell is a young man, the late Lester bird held on to power while wearing pampers, robin is not as well as happen to all of us but Gaston using him to hold power.

  7. @ Biggs

Did you write the article? If you’re not afraid then why did you spend $6,000,000.00 to buy Anthony ‘Judas Iscariot’ Smith. Isn’t that desperation?
Losses? What about the blatant admission of Gaston admitting transferring voters to steal the election – Harold never lost but u guys bought the seat for Melford with your hundreds of thousand of dollars 48 hours before the election,

  8. Oh my!!! The laboRATs are uneasy.
Lovell has come back like a fly in their milk.
    Great move Lovell.
    You have them very uneasy.
They now have a book of reasons why tou should not have come back.
    Sorry for them.
You are going to spoil their celebration
Gaston has not slept for the past two nights.
    More sleepless nights for him.

  9. It’s no surprise that this lengthy, panicked memo is unsigned. The author, who confuses experience with failure and resilience with desperation, knows that their arguments against Harold Lovell are as unfounded as their lack of courage in attaching their name to them. The people of All Saints West will ultimately decide who their leader is, and they will prioritize a seasoned fighter over the whispers of anonymous critics. The fear of Lovell’s return is evident, and this memo serves as the first indication of that anxiety.

  10. Pringle tell us how much millions are you been offered to jump to Labour. Ten million? You can name your price.
Pringle: Gaston me want 20 million!
Gaston: Bwoi only five million left fram alfa nargo!
Pringle: twenty five million cyan work den. 20 fram Naria and five fram you!
Gaston: Maria only hab three million!
Pringle: talk to Robin and bring me Thirty million.
Gaston:,Bwoi ah wha kinda maths dat?
Pringle: it cost you more every time you try and rob me. Ah leader me be. Me nah name Anthony,
