From a Chuckle to a Laugh, but Now I Am on the Floor Holding My Belly with Laughter
The absurdity of it all! Hon. Algernon Watts, the Member of Parliament for St. George, has once again shown us why he’s more suited for a comedy club than the hallowed halls of Parliament. His antics during a recent Facebook Live session, where he spent over an hour explaining why he refused to debate the budget in Parliament, are nothing short of hilarious.
But let’s get serious for a moment. It’s embarrassing, to say the least, that a Member of Parliament would rather run from a debate than face the music. Watts’ decision to abandon his post and explain himself on social media instead of in Parliament is a clear dereliction of duty.
And what about his Facebook Live performance? The antics of flipping through pages, rummaging through a big bag for notes, fixing his tie, wearing glasses to look studious, and showing off financial printed booklets with highlighted pages – it’s a wonder he didn’t trip over his own feet!
But here’s the thing: serious, intelligent people should not support this kind of folly. We deserve better from our elected officials. We deserve representatives who will stand up for what’s right, even if it’s difficult. We deserve leaders who will engage in meaningful debates and work towards finding solutions to our country’s problems.
Let’s not forget that Hon. Melford Nicholas spoke last, unchallenged, on the most damning issues in Antigua, including APUA, water, electricity, and telecommunications. If we were to believe the serpent strategy, one would ask a simple yet poignant question: who is shadowing MP Nicholas? It’s a question that Watts and his cohorts would do well to answer.
So, let’s all take a moment to laugh at the absurdity of it all. But then, let’s get serious and demand better from our elected officials. We deserve nothing less.
However, let’s not be fools for fools. Hon. Algernon Watts’ decision to debate after Smith, supposedly because he was shadowing the agricultural minister, raises more questions than answers. If Smith went first, was Watts planning to improvise and risk embarrassing himself, or would he take the time to go home and prepare fresh notes? If this boy can’t debate with the notes he said he prepared (2 hours – 20 pages worth), was he going to debate impromptu?
It’s shocking that Watts wouldn’t have prepared adequately for the debate, considering the importance of the agricultural sector to Antigua’s economy. His lack of preparation is a clear indication of his incompetence as a Member of Parliament.
As a constituent, I demand better representation. If UPP MPs like Watts are not going to take their responsibilities seriously and engage in meaningful debates, then I want my vote back! It’s time for competent leaders who will prioritize the needs of our nation. I am done with the talk show and snake-pit rambling!

The man from St.George is afraid to debate. He’s only debated once in parliament.
The Prime Minister, Prime Minister!!! RUN a WHOLE country via a RADIO STATION. So what is your problem? Who going to read your long nonsense of an article??
serpent only have big chat on Radio and Facebook Live. He is a DEBATE COWARD!!!!! He and the Preacherman Shooy always chatting and laughing on the “RUDEBOY STAND” instead of doing the people’s business
Voted for Serpent ONLY because we wanted to get RID of Dean!…Once Again…. Serpent is an Idiot, or according to Knight, A USEFUL IDIOT….We knew that he would be of NO use in the Lower House. Not fooling ourselves to believe such, put his purpose was served.
So come next election, we will do the correct thing!
And you are correct author. He then went on some live show where he would not be challenged by his peers…well, NOT his peers as he has no equal in the Lower House, except may be for Shuggy (another USEFUL IDIOT).
Can someone please tabulate the amount of time that Hon. Algernon Watts and Hon. Kelvin Simon, made their presentations in the Lower House? Then we can calculate how our Tax munies ere being spent.
