VC Bird International airport

Antigua Tourist Season 2026 opens with the airport runway under renovation, the roads around dug up and dusty, and the airport itself overgrown with grass seeds attracting birds, and threatening aircraft movements. Especially dangerous is the area where private aircraft are handled and parked.

The size of the small jets and their length of stay on the ground, are particularly attractive to birds and small creatures, encouraged through shelter accommodated by the long grass.

The small parking ramp grounds have been neglected, and even the lighting is no longer available at night, making the area open to serious violations. And this, in spite of each aircraft being invoiced US $100. specifically established, for the maintenance and lighting of the area, remote from the main terminal, which is well lit.

With jet movements now back at the pre-Covid numbers it is inconceivable that the fees from 1200-1500 aircraft handled annually at just one institution, could not cover the cost of preparing the area, for the welcoming of the U.S. Thanksgiving opening of 2025/6season.

After 25 years of offering exclusive service for private & corporate aircraft on the remote parking ramp, formerly operated by the U.S. Base as their Airfield, the preparation should by fully in place by the Airport maintenance, so that the season begins in a clean safety controlled area.

When airports are under renovation the comfort of the traveler, and the safety of the aircraft from dirt and dust, is provided for in the advance planning, so that minimal discomfort is endured, especially among the high-paying, high-flying elites.

Since Covid and the numbers are now back, the time to raise the fees could be now as the agreement permits, so there is no need for tardiness, the money has been agreed. Of course as we have know from recent events, many fees are collected but not paid over to government, unless rigorous oversight of Private Sector remissions are put in place. Airports are run on fees, but if ignorance of their existence prevails, the darkness at night, and the overgrowth could create danger for aircraft.
