Online scammers are targeting residents of Antigua and Barbuda by posing as the Governor General, Sir Rodney Williams.
These fraudsters create fake Facebook pages using variations of His Excellency’s name or title to deceive unsuspecting victims.
The elaborate hoax aims to persuade individuals to make payments for promised but nonexistent returns. In some cases, victims have lost over $1,000.
The scammers collect information from various online platforms to identify potential targets.
Officials urge residents to remain vigilant and verify the authenticity of requests for money online.
The Office of the Governor General can be contacted to confirm such requests and report suspicious activity.
This isn’t the first time the Governor General’s name has been used in scams, with similar incidents occurring in the past.
Facebook has been informed of the issue, but its community standards remain unbroken, according to the platform.
