Government Takes Action Against Derelict Buildings in Antigua and Barbuda
In a bid to improve public safety and enhance the aesthetic appeal of communities, Prime Minister Gaston Browne has announced a concerted effort to tackle the issue of derelict buildings across Antigua and Barbuda.
Speaking during the nation’s 43rd Independence Day celebrations, Browne emphasized the need to address neglected properties that contribute to a decline in community standards and safety.
“Property owners will be held accountable for the maintenance of their land,” Browne declared, outlining the government’s plan to confront the problem of abandoned buildings and overgrown lots.
He indicated that if property owners fail to maintain their properties, the costs of maintenance will become a charge against the land.
The Prime Minister also mentioned that derelict properties could be sold at public auction if property taxes and other charges remain unpaid for an extended period.
“We cannot afford to tolerate decrepit buildings and abandoned lands overgrown with unsightly bush in our communities,” he stated, calling for a collective effort to improve the nation’s environment.
This initiative aims not only to beautify communities but also to reduce potential safety hazards associated with abandoned structures. Residents have expressed concerns that such properties can attract criminal activity, leading to calls for action to ensure neighborhoods remain safe and inviting.
Browne’s announcement comes as part of a broader strategy to enhance the overall quality of life in Antigua and Barbuda.
By addressing issues of neglect and promoting responsible property ownership, the government hopes to foster a sense of pride among citizens in their communities.
Community leaders are encouraged by the government’s focus on this issue, viewing it as an opportunity to engage residents in maintaining their neighborhoods. Local organizations are expected to play a role in identifying problem areas and collaborating with authorities to implement clean-up initiatives.
The Prime Minister says his commitment to ridding the country of derelict buildings reflects a vision for a cleaner, safer, and more beautiful Antigua and Barbuda.

Clean up the damn place.Antigua is FILTHY.I have driven around Antigua. I am appalled by what I have seen.It has never, ever, been that DUTTY.
Create a what’s app hotline, so we as citizens can photograph the issue and send the location to be dealt with.
I totally endorse this venture. Not only do these derelict properties facilitate as hubs for criminal activities, they also deface communities and cause rat infestation.
Antigua have some of the best damn talkers in government right now, but none of them are doer’s, and that is why the place look so damn filthy.
This man wasted millions chasing a pipe dream in Liat2020 where he didn’t even come out on the winning side for the people of Antigua with that atrocious 70/30 deal he struck with Air Peace. And just before that, he wasted time and money on another pipe dream with the Alpha Nero debacle, but just before that he brought in a 1000 illegal immigrants mascuraging dem around town as so-called business people.
You all remember that conundrum? Yep this same PM.
All these are failed ventures, and now he’s talking about cleaning up derelict buildings..
😂..damn joker this man is.
People need doers,not talkers..
Montserrat had a PM one time in Sir John Osborne, that man wasn’t much of a talker, but he became one of the best PM, not only in Montserrat, but throughout the entire Caribbean, because you know why, the man was doer, not a talker!
It might do you well to learn something from such men like those Gatson.
Enough damn talking.
Time for action..and the first move should be to remove you from office.
Talk talk talk.
