Officials Await Opening of New Airport in Barbuda for Jet Aircraft, Faces Regulatory Delays

New Barbuda Airport Runway

Antigua and Barbuda’s government is eager for the new airport in Barbuda to open soon, as it will accommodate jet aircraft.

The opening has been delayed due to outstanding regulatory issues. Prime Minister Gaston Browne stated that final approval from the Eastern Caribbean Civil Aviation Authority (ECCAA) is needed before the airport can open to the public, ensuring compliance with safety regulations.

Despite the delays, PM Browne hopes the airport will open within weeks, enabling Barbudans to receive jet traffic for the first time.

This delay has pushed back the opening, which was initially anticipated to be in time for Christmas.

The new airport will offer direct flights, saving residents the need to travel to Antigua for air travel.

  1. Are we supposed to be impressed that jets place will be landing in Barbuda, any more than a super Yacht is arriving at Falmouth Harbour?

This is an unfinished airport that Barbudans don’t want; and is built primarily to serve the interest of only wealthy individuals flying in by private jets directly to Barbudans.

Barbudans and Antiguans will be flying by prop-planes as usual; and to a segregated area where the facility is a low grade substandard outhouse.

Gaston has been able to get government as well as private institutions to carry his water; the Eastern Caribbean Civil Aviation Authority (ECCAA) the Eastern Caribbean Civil Aviation Authority (ECCAA) is NOT one of them.

Here is a classic case of the media carrying Gaston Browne’s water; failing to examine the many factors surrounding this airport’s development.

You read it here first: Judgement Day is less than a week away.

Message to Gaston Browne: You are able to get a lot of people accepting your misinformation; but you have lost this one.

    • You guys never see the progress of ABLP, and congrats the government for the efforts they have made. When UPP in power, tell me what did they do for the Barbuda ? Enlighten me please.
It’s time you all put away the nonsense and work together for a better Antigua and Barbuda.

      • It’s not political – the airport is really only for the wealthy. Tell me who will actually but 1 plane ticket to go to “Mainland” to catch a flight?

      • How strange: “You guys never see the progress of ABLP, and congrats the government for the efforts they have made”. What is this progress you speak of? Building a runway Barbudans do not want, destroying the natural eco system that Barbudans have lived with for many generations and cherished, to satisfy the super wealthy is not progress to the Barbudans. What do you find difficult in understanding that Barbudans do NOT want your type of progress, they only ask to be left alone to live their lives peacefully with nature and not think about lining their pockets and calling it “progress”. What has UPP done for Barbuda, you ask? UPP left Barbudans alone to live as they always did, did not make derogatory comments about them or were condescending towards them. That may be the reason why Barbudans never took UPP to court; they got along well together and never treated Barbudans in the way described earlier. It’s worth thinking about.

  2. Does an airport consist of a runway only? I have to ask because every time I hear talks about this new airport all i am seeing is a picture of a runway. If anyone out there have a picture of the brand new terminal building please post it

  3. There are also clearing outhouses on the cavernous strip they calling an airport. The nefarious plan is becoming black & white, people and property vs people and culture.

ANU administration is trying to show Barbudan what Aparteid really means, plantation life, and second class citizenship. Remember us Barbudans have not had the hardship of being fenced in since we dragged off the ships in chains 400 years ago. We lived communally.

We have always had basic food security, access to our fishing and hunting grounds. Now, agricultural lands are being sold for real estate. The powers that be in Antigua know they are causing serious trouble this year and all they do is insult, threaten, wave guns and tell us there is nothing we can do.

They are trying to ARM PLH with firearms with a shooting range next to our national park … ? Why? Arm Against who ? The majority ? This is a complete disaster like Gaza.

If ‘standing’ is granted for Barbudans then ‘the airport was just the beginning’ will be the new tag line for ANU administration and Barbudans alike. Regardless of outcome, the legal challenges will be taken way above the sway of DLC PLH GOAB influence over our local courts, bought representatives, and the few Judas willing to sell out whilst ignoring the 75% democratic will of the peoplevote. No Land for Sale’

Facts are : Everyone is welcome to visit, we live it, you will love it. It’s a safe destination, no trouble, unlocked doors, friendly faces, one family. This is a nature island, environment above profit. Lifestyle above greed. The island has saved us as a people because we look after the land, sea and environs, and it looks after us. We bounced back after Irma in spite of the attempts to sell this entire island off as a private ‘ Jumby Bay on Steroids’.

    Barbuda Forever . BRA.

    • Keep the dream alive! Fight to keep your patrimony! Generations yet unborn will thank you! Antiguans are willing to sell their souls to the devil for a mess of pottage! Though they die like Jim Kobe’s followers, lthey lick their lips at the poison Kool aid and declare it was sweet!

  4. as soon as the elites private jets land the runway will break up. it has no proper foundation and the thin layer of asphalt is also sub standard. The foreign construction company used had no proper experience but made big money, now even owning many acres of Barbuda prime land.
again barbuda and barbudans are scr*wed.

  5. @Margaret Williams,

It is not that others do not see the progress of ALBP. What you consider progress; for them, it’s regressive.

Here is a bit of the enlightenment you requested.

There is nothing progressive about an airport built on wetlands that feeds the Barbuda aquifers. Most Barbudans use well water, which is now being disrupted; and the runoff from the jet fuel will contaminate the well water.

There is nothing progressive about destroying Barbuda wildlife sanctuaries. The backcountry scrub bush, the vegetation and isolation in which the wildlife (including deer) thrive has been destroyed.

There is nothing progressive about constructing and airport in a black country with two terminals buildings. One for wealthy whites, and the other for primarily poor local blacks.
Last time I looked it was called Apartheid. Apartheid is not progressive. It ended in South Africa in 1994. The Palestinians are fighting with every drop to end it. We don’t want it on Barbuda.

Would you want to arrive at an airport, where on your arrival you are directed to a small concrete hut sitting in dusty dirt patch; and hidden in the distance is an expansive structure in a garden, for the jetsetters only.

When this reaches the outside world. The international headlines will say:

“The ruling Political Party ALBP in a Black led country in Caribbean Islands of Antigua and Barbuda; has an Apartheid Airport on Barbuda. A potion for wealthy whites only; and a portion for the 1,500 local blacks.”

With regards to the UPP and progress”
“Ten miles of concrete roads; better than any in Antigua.”
” Tripling of Trained high-quality teachers.”
“Most important the 2007 Barbuda Land Act”.
“Fivefold increase in scholarships to University”

And all that the Leader of The ABLP has to say: “For the first time in history Barbuda will have jets landing.”

  6. @Margaret Williams
Since you raise the question; I’m going to take the liberty of writing that you are a full ALBP conspiracy theorist, and Gaston Browne apologist , who would never be able to understand what’s wrong with the construction of this airport.

If I’m wrong; then you are just too dumb to understand what is happening in Barbuda

  7. While their role is for compliance regarding international airline safety;
the Eastern Caribbean Civil Aviation Authority (ECCAA), has to reject a segregated airport before the airport can open to the public.

Not only ensuring compliance with safety; but to safeguard their legacy by not approving and giving a green light to a segregated airport.

    • There must be a balance between the people of Barbuda and development. The cacophony of noise against the Govt as if they are speaking for the people of Barbuda is deafning. I am not from this part of the world, so I do not have a dog in this fight.
All I am asking, is there a balance and has it been found? Please, spare me the political Mumbo Jumbo

  10. @Truth
You say you are not from around here.
Best advise I can give you; stay out of our Business.

We write about a destructive situation and a corrupt Government, and for you it’s cacophony of noise against the Govt.
You seemingly are afraid of the truth about the Government’s actions that is raping the Barbuda people.

Clearly says you are a person without a moral compass. ……..Safe travels
