ST. Lucia Times – Students from the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) currently in Morocco have not been directly affected by Friday’s earthquake that claimed hundreds of lives.
Confirmation came Saturday in a statement from OECS Director General Dr. Didacus Jules.
An OECS Secretariat statement said Jules wished to assure families that the Embassies of Eastern Caribbean States to the Kingdom of Morocco had been in touch with all nationals in Morocco, affirming that none have been directly affected.
The OECS Director General and OECS Authority Chairman, Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew of St. Kitts & Nevis, both expressed condolences to the government and the people of Morocco.
“Morocco has been a steadfast friend and ally of the OECS, and we wish the Kingdom a speedy recovery from this traumatic event,” the OECS Director General said.
Saint Lucia’s Ministry of Education has disclosed that forty-eight locals are students in the North African country and all are safe.
On Saturday, the Morocco Interior Ministry said over 2,000 people died from a 6.8-magnitude earthquake about 50 miles south of Marrakech.
Over 2,000 others sustained injuries.
