October Marks Cybersecurity Awareness Month: Experts Urge Online Safety

Antigua & Barbuda has been ranked last in the ITU’s Global Cybersecurity Index, raising concerns from the Director of Cybersecurity about the validity of the report’s findings.

October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, and the Ministry of ICT’s Cybersecurity Unit is reminding the public about safe online practices under this year’s theme, “Safety Online.”

Gordina Hector-Murrell, Head of the unit, warned that individuals remain the weakest link in cybersecurity, with many falling victim to online scams through malicious links, downloads, or websites.

She advised using strong passwords or passphrases of at least 12 characters, combining upper and lower-case letters, numbers, and symbols, and avoiding easily guessed personal information. For those who struggle to remember passwords, Hector-Murrell recommended researching and using password managers. Multi-factor authentication is also encouraged.

Regular updates to devices and applications are crucial, she said, as they fix vulnerabilities and improve security. Victims of scams should report incidents to the police, while businesses and government agencies should provide training and alert clients to potential threats.

“Don’t be embarrassed if you fall victim,” Hector-Murrell added. “Report it and take steps to prevent it from happening again.”
