Ocean Fest 2024: A Celebration of Ocean Conservation and Community
Ocean Fest 2024 made waves this weekend as community members gathered to celebrate the ocean and its vital role in our lives. Held at the picturesque coastline of the Codrington Lagoon, the event combined education, conservation, and fun to inspire stewardship for the marine environment. With the theme “Let’s Use Our Ocean Without Using It Up,” the festival highlighted innovative conservation efforts, hands-on activities, and engaging competitions.
Organized by barbudanGO, with the support of sponsors WAITT Foundation and Deborah Brosnan and Associates, Ocean Fest 2024 brought together NGOs, scientists, and locals to showcase a variety of ocean-focused initiatives. The event aimed to foster awareness and involvement in the protection and sustainable use of marine resources.
Highlighting Conservation Efforts
Visitors were captivated by Deborah Brosnan and Associates’ displays of coral reef cultivation and the use of coral trees to restore damaged reefs. Researcher Holy Trew explained how these structures provide a habitat for marine life, aiding in biodiversity recovery. Equally inspiring was barbudanGO’s work in cultivating three mangroves at the Low Pond Conservation Site mangrove nursery, which featured all three species native to the region—red, black, and white mangroves. Guests had the opportunity to participate in games and trivias that helped them learn critical information about how these ecosystems shield coastlines and act as nurseries for marine species.
Environmental Awareness Group (EAG) special exhibit on the Antigua racer snake and the restoration of Redonda offered a glimpse into the remarkable work being done to protect the island’s unique wildlife. These efforts have transformed Redonda into a thriving haven for endemic species, serving as a model for conservation in the Caribbean.
Sizzling Seafood Competitions
Ocean Fest wouldn’t be complete without a celebration of the culinary treasures of the sea. The seafood cooking competition drew enthusiastic crowds as local chefs showcased their creativity and skills, crafting dishes that highlighted the importance of sustainable seafood practices. The sister team Sophia and Shianne Charles emerged victorious winning $1500.00 while second place was captured by Zaria Nedd who walked away with $1000.00. The filet fish competition, which was a new feature this year became an immediate fan favorite, three (3) participants raced against an eight minute clock to demonstrate their precision and expertise in filleting. Holy Trew, the sole female entrant, emerged victorious winning $300.00.
This year’s new feature, an executive chef demonstration, was a highlight for food lovers. The chef offered samples of exquisite seafood dishes using stingray and shellfish to patrons, blending flavor with a message about sustainability. The aroma of freshly cooked seafood wafting through the air added to the festive atmosphere.
Making a Splash with Community Competitions
The swimming competition brought out the best in participants and spectators alike. Swimmers of all ages took to the water, showcasing their skills while emphasizing the importance of staying connected to the ocean. From this spirited display of ocean appreciation Whitfield Gore and Tjae Cephas.
Spreading the Message of Sustainability
To further promote conservation, attendees engages in various ocean conservation trivia challenges and received free T-shirts emblazoned with this year’s theme. The shirts served as a wearable reminder of the importance of protecting our marine ecosystems while making sustainable use of their resources.
Gratitude to Sponsors and Participants
Ocean Fest 2024 would not have been possible without the generous support of the WAITT Foundation and Deborah Brosnan and Associates. Their dedication to ocean conservation helped bring this vibrant and impactful event to life.
As the sun set on Ocean Fest 2024, it was clear that the festival had not only celebrated the beauty and bounty of the ocean but also strengthened the community’s commitment to preserving it.
