National Solid Waste Management Authority (NWSMA) inspector Dale Richards is urging residents to stop littering and to help keep drains clear as cleanup operations continue across the country.
Richards, who oversees drainage maintenance alongside community beautification teams, said clogged drains caused by garbage and construction over public gutters reduce water flow and increase flood risk. He called on the government to prohibit building over public gutters and urged nationals abroad to maintain their properties.
“It’s irresponsible when people go overseas and leave their lands overgrown. The government ends up cleaning it,” Richards said.
He noted that bulk waste can become dangerous debris during hurricanes and highlighted a drainage issue in Point that struggles to handle runoff from several streets.
Richards appealed to citizens to take greater civic pride, emphasizing that keeping drains clean is critical to preventing flooding during heavy rains.
