The government has carved out a package to incentivize the group of nurses that specifically deal with patients infected with COVID-19.
That’s according to Minister of Health Molwyn Joseph who said, “our nurses will get an additional $1000 a month as a COVID risk pay.”
In addition to the money, “we are providing them with vitamins to build your immune system. We are providing them with a home away from home. I don’t like the term away from home but a facility where they can stay after work rather than going home to their families”.
He said this was requested by the nurses, adding “the Ministry is providing them with support, with transportation to do their shopping and other chores that they would wish to do because they are the ones on the frontline and with all the intensity and they anxiety, we want them when they leave from work they can find a place of relaxation”, the Minister revealed.
“If they have to go shopping and as a matter of fact, we have spoken to some of the supermarkets to give them special privileges of accessing the supermarket rather than having to stand in line”, he added.
The government will also provide accommodation in the form of apartments like “for instance, we rent facilities like in Marble Hill and places like that and even down to Hawksbill, the Minister explained.
Minister Joseph said the Infectious Disease Control Center at the Old Holberton Hospital facility will be commissioned next week and “we have residential facilities for the nurses right on the spot. So, when they are through working, they don’t have to go anywhere, they sleep there, they have their facilities there, their kitchen, everything right at the same spot. This is a unique development in the handling of infectious diseases. I don’t know if there’s any such facility in the Caribbean.”

Rubbish
Every thing is not political
Promise made promise kept…… Whether or not you are on the journey, the big red machine is movi g on….. All our frontline workers will surely be taken care of shortly. Our PM is always a man of his word
I mark DOWN the government for this move (package of incentives).
In my opinion, SINGLING OUT NURSES, by an OPPOSITION POLITICIAN, was done for POLITICAL REASONS.
With all due respect, the nurses ARE NOT THE ONLY FRONT-LINE WORKERS who are exposed and by extension the families of ALL front-line workers.
Initially, in response to the POLITICAL MOVE, the government indicated that the matter of incentives to ALL front-line workers would have been looked at AFTER the crisis would have been brought under control THEN FOR WHATEVER REASON it fell into the trap laid for it by the OPPOSITION POLITICIAN.
That was a shame and a wrong choice, in my opinion.
Why are the NURSES (and by extension their families) being looked at in a different light as oppose to E.M.S. Technicians (and by extension their families)?
Why are the NURSES (and by extension their families) being looked at in a different light as oppose to Security Workers at the airport (and by extension their families)?
I can go on and on.
In my opinion, we are all in this fight together.
It was shameful for the Opposition Politician to seek to divide and conquer for his political gain but having said that it was even more shameful for the government to fall for that trap seemingly not looking at the WHOLE PICTURE in regards to ALL FRONT-LINE WORKERS and by extension their families.
Thank you Beef for pointing this out. Nurses are NOT the only ones on the frontlines.
