The Fisheries Division is requesting the cooperation of all mariners in the state of Antigua and Barbuda. The French Institute for Research for the Exploitation of the Sea (IFREMER) recently deployed six drifting buoys equipped with GPS beacons off the coast of Guadeloupe and Martinique.
One of these buoys was recently spotted off the Northeast coast of Antigua while a second appears to be drifting along a similar path.
The buoys have been deployed as part of a regional project, Carib-Coast, lead by the Geological and Mining Research Bureau (BRGM), with an aim to prevent coastal risks related to climate change in the Caribbean region.
If you see any of these buoys, we ask that you do not approach or remove from the water as they are collecting valuable data.
Thank you for your kind cooperation.
