Tropical Storm Warning for Barbuda re: Jerry

Residents should complete their hurricane preparedness plans ahead of tropical storm conditions from Tropical Storm Jerry.

The latest information from the Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Office is that there has been a slight shift in the system’s forecast track, bringing it closer to the islands – particularly Barbuda.

As a result, the Tropical Storm Watch was upgraded to a Tropical Storm Warning. This means that sustained tropical storm force winds are expected somewhere within Barbuda, in this case within the next 12 to 18 hours. The Tropical Storm Watch remains in effect for Antigua and the rest of the Leeward Islands.

The Met Office advises that residents should continue preparing in case tropical storm conditions extend farther south than currently projected.

Residents should have their emergency kit stocked with canned and other non-perishable foods, water, first aid kit, battery-operated radio, flashlight, medication, personal hygiene items, clothing, blanket and other needed supplies.

Homes, businesses and other structures should be secured and safeguarded. It is also important that fishermen and farmers secure their equipment and activate their preparedness plans.

NODS is appealing to individuals to avoid walking or driving in flood waters as they can become dangerous and life-threatening.

NODS remains in close contact with the Met Office and will continue to update residents so it’s important individuals constantly monitor the local media.
