There will be no official opening parade for Antigua’s Carnival this year, according to Mas and Parades Sub-Committee Chair Marcelle Freeland.
Instead, elements of the traditional cultural showcase will be incorporated into the LIAT T-shirt Mas on Friday, 25 July.
Freeland said the parade will start at the Old House of Culture and follow a route through Queen Elizabeth Highway, featuring stilt walkers, moko jumbies, John Bulls, steel and iron bands, and other traditional characters.
“We’re hoping to pay tribute to Claudette Peters, Burning Flames, and have Hell’s Gate participate in honour of their 80th anniversary,” she said.
Seventeen troupes have registered for T-shirt Mas. The parade is set for 3pm to 9pm and will follow a route from Old Parham Road near T.N. Kirnon School through several key city streets before returning to the starting point.
Judging will take place at three points: Factory Road (near the old Brother Bee gas station), Redcliffe Street (outside the Cultural Division), and the top of High Street.
Freeland urged all bands to be punctual for T-shirt Mas and all other scheduled parades.

Sooo…. T Shirt mas is the opening of carnival. Ok then. Nonsense!
Huge mistake in my view. This is like a tone down Carnival. The opening parade usually sets the tone for Carnival and is a grand opportunity to kick off the festivities by showcasing and presenting all the unique traditions of Carnival including costumes, dances, music, as well as all the major participants in the various shows. I wonder who make these decisions?
This makes absolutely no sense, to combine it with all vulgar ness when it’s suppose to be a parade and start off Antiguas carnival nicely with pure clean fun, now you’re going to combine that with t-shirt Mas? This makes no sense. With the opening parade everyone is supposed to be well mannerly nd appropriately dressed, it’s also suppose to be kids-like , combining the 2 is not a good idea.
Very sad… What’s the actual point. Carnival is getting worse and worse every year.. Poor management. A Lack of creative vision. No resilience. Just nonsense. The parade should be the PRIMARY Experience that set’s the tone of the festivities to follow. What a watered down bunch of hogwash this is going to be.
Disappointing
Too much nakedness at tshirt, how I suppose to take my child/children out to watch the parade. With participants high on alcohol, Molly, coke and weed. Also performing act that is only for the bedroom. What example are we setting for our youths?
I will observe the changes before I make a critique….not gonna jump on the horse and cart condemning this new move…but mark my works, there will be others mocking this new move…
