MP Algernon ‘Serpent’ Watts recently addressed rumors of animosity towards Hon. Anthony Smith in a candid video, clarifying his actions during the latest parliamentary session. Watts emphasized that his decision to walk out was not driven by personal dislike for Smith.
“I didn’t walk out because I hated Anthony,” Watts stated, recounting a chance encounter with Smith at the Parliament entrance. “We were coming in around the same time. I was dealing with a persistent cold and coughing. As I was coming back inside, I saw him entering and held the door open for him. He thanked me and mentioned that we need to talk.”
Watts reiterated that he does not see Smith as an adversary. “My words to him were ‘you’re not my enemy.’ I have nothing but love for him. We will not be hanging out because I don’t hang out with the LI party, but that’s that.”
Reflecting on Smith’s current position, Watts expressed genuine goodwill. “Anthony is now where he is. God bless him. I wish him all the best in life, and I mean that from my heart. Kudos to him for the reasons he gave for his decisions. He’s a thinking man, and he would have thought long and hard about it. It’s for the constituents, the people who voted for him, to judge.”
Watts concluded by emphasizing his respect for Smith’s right to make his own decisions and his hope for Smith’s future success. “I wish him all the best, and I mean that sincerely. It’s up to the people who voted for him to decide how they feel about his decisions. But as far as I’m concerned, I hold no ill will towards him.”

I have never heard anyone in UPP said they are waiting for Robin to keel over and certainly would not support that kid ND of rhetoric. But like all ABLP talking points, they try to subliminally plant that lie into the psyche of Antiguans. I expect that from less educated ABLP supporters but you sir knows better and should do better.
Serpent reply was weak and seek to curry favour with Smith and not appear to be at odds with him. This is POLITICS not just another day on the cricket team or football team where one friend switch sides and a vex for a day or two. This is amateur politics at its finest.
First off, you don’t play softball politics with someone who just tipped the scales even further out of favor for the UPP. Do you believe any politician on the ABLP would be making such an apology and showing grace and offering well wishes to another politician who just made your party weaker? Also, the rumors of in-fighting and other such disunity will only seem to reinforce the perception of a wounded party from the inside. The ABLP is just quiet about this but cleverly making moves that score a century in cricket terms.
Serpent, you don’t have to publicly bash him but you must send a message to his constituents and as one living there that you will lead the charge that he will not retain his MP status. Whether or not you mean it, you must send a public message of disapproval for his actions. You act like he was hired by the World Bank and he resigned from the party to accept his position overseas. So, it is just to replace him with a by-election.
People saw Serpent’s action as weak and it also silently confirmed what Smith said in Parliament and Dr. Athill now says. People generally don’t want a nice guy in politics. Look at all the nice guys and see their successes. See the current PM vs the current Opposition Leader. Even he had admiration for the PM.
Like him or hate him, he understands the psychology of politics and the maneuvers necessary to stay in power. The UPP needs a professional to help them to realign themselves. This will happen again and all the hard work to capture so many seats last election will be in vain and will see the ABLP in power at least for two more terms. I would bet the house on that.
