Reliable sources reveal that the decision to forego the ABST reduction this year is part of a broader strategy to augment revenue for meeting monthly obligations.

The initiative, designed to stimulate merchant activities and alleviate consumer prices, has been set aside as the government focuses on enhancing its financial resources. CLICK HERE TO JOIN OUR WHATS APP GROUP

The Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda notes that the tax-to-GDP ratio is the lowest in the OECS, emphasizing the advice from international finance institutions to elevate it to approximately 20 percent of GDP, whereas it currently hovers around 16 percent.

Sources suggest that the government’s primary concern is meeting salary and wage payments for December, typically disbursed around the middle of the month to accommodate public needs.

In addition, the government has committed to further raise salaries and wages for public sector workers in the coming year, building upon the initial five percent increase. The Prime Minister and Finance Minister, Gaston Browne, have been hinting at potential adjustments in the country’s tax structure to address ongoing financial challenges.

Detailed insights into the government’s tax policies will be unveiled when the Prime Minister presents the 2024 National Budget on December 14. SOURCE- POINTE XPRESS NEWSPAPER

  1. Red is really stale bread because that is all Gaston have to offer people. He boast that we have one of the fastest growing economy, but all we get is the bread plait.
He is playing with the people’s emotion. He will say no ABST and at the last minute change his mind and say he listened to the cries of the people and give it anyway. Always playing games.

    • Oh please….damn if you do…damn if you don’t.
Don’t know when are we going to get it…no political party can solve Antigua and Barbuda problem…Man can’t solve man’s problems..not in Antigua…not in America…so we need to stop ramping and raging about GASTON BROWNE….UPP cant do no better….in their ten years…we didn’t bet any better…yes they implemented a few social programs….and reward themselves with full pension.. few utilities etc so what them money do…that’s what we need to stop as a people this full salary and free utilities for politicians…talk about that…fight against that…we are here like puppets with politicians pulling the strings….you really think they have the people at heart…
Its total wickedness and unconscionable they passed laws to feather themselves….that law of full salary and free utilities to politicians is WICKEDNESS PURE WICKEDNESS….THAT WE NEED TO STOP!

      • @ Dexter Pelle

That’s the problem with you minions, when you have no adequate response for the state of affairs in our country you go blaming the UPP- a party that inherited 28 years of mis-management and corruption from the ALP. The tide was about to turn in 2014 when an influential financial paper projected that Antigua was on its way to be one of the wealthiest countries in the western hemisphere- then they were voted out of office.
If Antigua is the economic power house that Gaston says it is then why are the roads so bad, why is there no constant flow of water, why is the country so broke, why is poverty so rampant and cost of living is through the roof?
How can you minions burdens us with new taxes?
Gaston and all of you full of IT. You guys just sick my stomach!

        • Nuff said, lets pray for our nation, and also vote wisely for the more righteous among our options of political parties. But most of all and for our protection, let us depend on God as our SOURCE and not man, ABLP nor any other political parties which are JUST STREAM, BUT THE SOURCE IS GOD!

        • You missed the point…UPP or ABLP CAN’T HELP US. all politicians is self serving…tell them abolish the full salary and free utilities as pension….and you will see the interest in politics disappear…they are ordinary citizens like all of us…

      • Poor DELUSIONAL apologist 😂😂 if all else fails in defending your duncy bat economic poor house leader you say ONLY GOD can solve it right??? People like you sick me to the core. THE SAME STRENGTH you woulda have for lovell have it for Gaston CLOWN and tell he he cant even run a sweetie tray. 🙄😒

      • @Dexter Pelle. My friend Dexter. We cannot stop any of what you state until we get the rid of ABLP. A govt must be afraid of its citizens and at the very least, we got UPP to listen to the people and voted them out when it wa felt it was time to go. But ABLP is different. They will spend off all our resources and try as hard as they can to stay in power by whatever means necessary. So there need not be a guarantee that any party will do better. It’s we the people who must vote them out until they realize that they must not mess with us. By that argument, ABLP should have been gone since the first term, when we realize Gaston listens to no one and certainly not the citizenry. By the way, this foolish statement that “All a dem is the same” is what is keeping us in this state of stupor.
Concerning the ABST relief, it’s just a game they playing. By tomorrow when Gaston returns, they will announce that, ” because they care so much”, the ABST will be given.

  2. When the reality sets in then the crash will follow.
Perilous times are these, my friends.
The taxman will knock at your door. Rather at the door of the poor man. The rich and politically connected will smile their way to deposit their loot in the foreign accounts; believing that they are large and safe.

When they tell you “peace and safety, then sudden destruction comes”.

When will a people wake up: Your greed and lust will be to your destruction.
You woefully call right wrong and wrong right. Thinking that your connections and loot will protect you.

The people suffer and die not for lack of knowledge, but rather because we blatantly refuse to accept and follow sound knowledge and wisdom. We prefer the selfish, evil way of life….which is of course, the way of death.

Time is at hand. The majority continues to follow the evil.

Antigua…like the rest of the world, is a lost domain; in need of a Deliverer. The ONLY SOURCE of our deliverance, we have rejected.

    WOE! WOE! WOE!

  3. SOURCE- POINTE XPRESS NEWSPAPER-This year, the anticipated ABST reduction weekend, cherished by both consumers and merchants, will not be implemented.

Tek dat in are you f****** nen nen.

The stemcell-dawg will politically sodomize are you next. A bunch of fools you
all are who voted for this idiot and his cabal.

We will wait for the news to hear what the St. Kitts government will be doing for its citizens while the idiots here just wish and wish and wish.

  4. It seems to me that the bright people in government have a serious problem with counting, a few days ago we got news of record breaking collection at customs and now we getting this news that there will be no ABST reduction this year , well somebody definitely lying to us or somebody can’t count or the evil gaston clown administration getting more and more wicked .

  5. Audley my friend and name sake, I agree with your overall sentiments of no taxation without justification (my words), however, in my opinion you missed a very important and crucial point.

That point is, THE ELECTORATE MUST WANT AND MUST DEMAND ‘the justification’ they seek and where the said ‘justification’ is not given, the majority of the electorate MUST show their disgust when they go to vote, thus justifying themselves.

It cannot be only up to an opposition party (regardless to which political party is in government) to carry the burden of getting ‘justification’ from a sitting government.

In my opinion, the electorates have its part to play because ultimately, a government reflects who the majority of the electorates are and what they stand for.

For those in the electorates who have the ability to educate those who are not so aware, they should do so in order to get an electorate that is most aware of the issues affecting their lives.

  6. When will Antigua wake up to the fact that ALP is just no good for the country. Never has and never will be. This lunatic PM is just the worst and that’s a fact.
Why are we surprised? He ha done nothing for Antigua and Barbuda on 9 years, what do we expect?
Then again, the mass of you voted do nothings like Cutie Benjamin, Molwyn Joseph, Pussy Salad, Chet Green, Pixie et al, and the worst of them all, Gaston Browne back into power to continue the degradation.
It just unfortunate that I have to suffer for this colossal error.

  7. The people have made thier bed….it’s time for them to enjoy laying in it….unfortunately the rain falls on the just and unjust….is just for all of you to know how to navigate the system for your individual and collective benefit. Come to Veggie Roots & Culture Fest 3, on 16th December 2023 at Department of Environment, where we will be addressing matters around our theme: “FREE COMES THROUGH SUSTAINABLITY ” We all need to know, we all need to grow, we all can benifit IF WE WORK TOGETHER

  8. Raising public servants salaries by X amount, then taxing the same public servants by the same amount is NO INCREASE, it is Political Trickery!

    • @pray for our nation
      Exactly 💯
I don’t understand is like those people don’t GAF about poor hard working Citizens.
A prime minister is supposed to be the father of the nation, He is supposed to care about all Citizens like they are his own biological children. How does the ministers of Government feel to be eating drinking, be able to take care of their medical and be able to do anything they want financially and most of the Citizens can hardly by a bread?? How can they do that? It takes some hard hearted person do be comfortable doing such. All poor people is suffering in this place. Some of them behave like they have Stockholm syndrome. To much Slavery mentality in this place. Some people are just stock in the colonial system.

Wake up people, wake up for your children and grand children future.

  9. Our biggest problem are western super powers. Everytime we seem to progress economically they change the rules and make it difficult for us to make a buck. They are out to kill our CIP programme next.

  10. Small businesses and hardworking Antiguans are going to suffer the most. The ABLP are slip-sliding and backtracking already, just months after being re-elected.

The NASTY party are out and out deceivers, gougers and grifters thar will continue to slip these increases through OUR front doors, back doors and any other ORIFICES they can locate.

An apt definition of Gaston Browne’s 2 term dictatorship:

A person who behaves in an autocratic way.

“For some reason he’s being a dictator – saying this is the way we are going to do it!”

    SUMS HIM UP PERFECTLY …

1522 days before a glorious tomorrow for Antiguans.

  11. Dexter pelle I understand what you are saying and am fully on board with you. Abolished the pension for life at full salary, and all utilities free til dem dead, pure BS, I don’t care which party, wrong is wrong.

  12. Our country is in serious problem, me nar lie……..cause if after all these Years the ABST WAIVER is being taken always from the people then what’s left for us to hope for under this inhumane and oppressive dictatorship???
