University of the West Indies negotiators are seeking further assurances that government can afford to undertake the costly venture of running a full-blown campus.

Yesterday, the Financial Sub-Committee of the Antigua site reported to Cabinet on the negotiations that have been taking place with the UWI team.

The committee reported that UWI wants assurances on the source of the funding that will go towards the support of the Fourth Landed Campus.

The Sub-Committee is expected to submit a Viability Analysis in January 2019 to the UWI, and then meet in February 2019 to complete the negotiations.

The government estimates that the Campus will attract approximately 4,000 students in 2019, when the campus opens, and that the numbers will grow in the years following.

OECS students attending UWI now pay less than the students from the other Caribbean states; Antigua will be a greater attraction for this group, it is thought, than the other campuses.

  1. No we can’t , we can’t even pay pensioners much less
We run all our schools into the ground much less university

    • I thought the UWI campus in Antigua would be funded largely by UWI itself. It’s crazy that we are giving UWI a free lunch on our dime! We don’t need UWI, we need our own university.

If we in Antigua are paying 100% for a university to be built here, then let’s call it the National University of Antigua (NUA) and manage it ourselves. Giving away our money to UWI so they can have another free campus is ridiculous

I support PM Browne wanting a university campus here, but let’s have some national pride and create our own university campus, not a UWI campus. Let’s create the National University of Antigua (NUA) and I think it would be great, since we are paying for it anyways.

  2. If government can’t meet the basic needs for its citizens on a consistent basis how it go sustain a University. In Bajan parlance Mr Beckles this ain no rum shop to run. Gawd Blind You!!!!

  3. Y’all so damn negetive. Never want to give anything a chance. Guess y’all rather spend hundreds an thousands sending ya children to Barbadoes, Jamacia and Trinidad. Smfh.

  4. We can’t afford NOT TO HAVE A UNIVERSITY here that will cater to the needs of the people. That is what we cannot afford. The government needs to do all it can to make this dream a reality. Executing a vision takes courage. Our country NEEDS this. Let’s make it happen.
