The Sports Tourism department within the Ministry of Tourism, Economic Development and Investment yesterday (Thurs) welcomed a 15 member cricket squad from the De MontFort University in London to Antigua for a week of cricket, charity and island fun.

Sports Tourism Officer Ms. Karen Joseph reports that while on the island the team will be engaged in friendly matches with two combined teams comprised of players from clubs around the island, as well as a charity event at the Five Islands School on Thursday and training sessions at the Factory Cricket Grounds.

While in Antigua the team will make visits to Stingray City, Shirley’s Heights, and will enjoy a circumnavigation cruise around the island, making the trip the ultimate sports tourism event.

“I would really like to take an opportunity to thank our partners at the Ministry of Sports and the Antigua and Barbuda Transport Board, as well as our local sports clubs for continuing the thrust to make Antigua and Barbuda excel as a Sports Tourism destination”, said Ms. Joseph.

Antiguan born international cricketing icons Sir Isaac Vivian Alexander Richards and Sir Curtley Ambrose will be making special visits to the young team during their stay, to share past experiences as well as any valuable tips and techniques that may assist in the improvement of their game.
