The Government of Antigua & Barbuda has agreed to spend as much as US$ 149,000 to purchase machines to deal will the influx of sargassum seaweed.
The Cabinet decided to purchase at least two Seaweed Harvesters that will capture the weed offshore and place it in a barge for dumping on land.
The Ministry of Public Works and the Ministry of Tourism will collaborate on acquiring the machines that sell for US$46,000 to $149,000, it was reported today.
The seaweed is seasonal and flows with a current that brings tons of the unwanted ocean vegetation, with trapped fish and crustaceans, dying or dead, to Caribbean shores.
Several hotels have had to move guests away from the rotting weed, which is usually highly pungent when on shore.

Finally! This was upsetting to say the least that nothing was being done before now. And I don’t even live close to the ocean. The scent reaches to my home in the middle of the island. My main concern was the loss to our Tourism product. I think we are so slow to react concerning the things that CAN affect our nation’s fiscal success. And that was upsetting, no matter what side of the politics you sit. Let’s hope this is a workable solution to this nagging problem.
