Taxi operators received a low number of fares over the weekend despite the presence of three ships at the Heritage Quay Port and the influx of shoppers due to the ABST relief weekend.
The St. John’s Taxi Association is based at the Heritage and Redcliffe Quays, and PRO of the Association Keithroy Lake says that weekend was not a busy one for the taxi operators.
“There were three big ships in town and only four persons out of thirty something of us on my line that got work yesterday, for example,” said Lake.
Despite the three ships in habour, Lake says that this did not necessarily translate into tourists taking tours. He further explained that good fare days are dependent on a number of factors and not just the number of people that are seen in the shopping areas.
“You may see a lot of ships coming into the ports,” explained the PRO.
“But it all depends on the type of ships, where they are coming from, which call are you… whether the first, second, third or even the last call. If you’re the last call, you know most of the people’s money are already finished, so they just come off the ships and just walk around and don’t spend any money.”
He went on to say that the operators also did not benefit from the increased number of local foot traffic due to the ABST relief weekend promotion in part because locals have “other means” to get their way around the city.

Taxi men always complain. Even if you arrive into Antigua after a Virgin A330, a BA 777 or an American 737 have landed and you take a taxi and you ask the driver how is business he will always say your job is the first he is getting for the day!
The way those taxi man behave I don’t blame nobody for not hiring them. Them act like de road belong to them and they dont know how to talk to people espically them from hertiage quay.
It’s sad that even tho these men are doing an honest work, some of you have only bad to say about them. What about the professional, polite and fair taxi drivers? Everyone deserves a piece of bread. It is okay to want better from an already legal means of revenue, than to conspire to involve in illegalities. Big up the proper taxi man dem in Antigua and Barbuda. Respect all round.
