T. N. Kirnon Primary Wins Spelling Bee Competition

The Rotaract Club of Antigua today announced that Timaurie Burnette, a fifth-grader at the T. N. Kirnon Primary School, has won the 2019 Inet-Rotaract Spelling Bee competition.
The T. N. Kirnon student overcame four other participants in nearly two hours and equal rounds of intense competition at the finals which were held on Saturday, 26th January, 2019, at the Precision Centre.
 
Finishing second was Andreas Pereira from Grace Christian Academy Primary School.
 
Tajorn Seaman from Piggotts Primary School finished third while St. Michael’s Primary School’s Tiara Floyde and Freetown Primary School’s Kendra Nathaniel came in fourth and fifth place respectively.

This year’s Rotaract Club of Antigua Spelling Bee featured students from over 19 private and public schools from across the country, including the Holy Trinity Primary School from our sister isle of Barbuda.

The five finalists were selected from ten (10) slots in the semi-finals which were held on Saturday, 19th January, 2019.

Ms. Ti-anna Harris, Community Service Director of the Rotaract Club of Antigua stated that, “We are extremely proud of these students, and ask that the Antiguan Community join us in congratulating Timaurie Burnette, Andreas Pereira, and Tajorn Seaman, for representing their schools well”.
 
Timaurie Burnette took home a laptop computer with a laptop bag and printer, one year free internet and tablet compliments APUA Inet, $1,500 Junior Savings Account compliments Eastern Caribbean Amalgamated Bank (ECAB), Haliborange Vitamins package compliments Seven Seas (Frank B Armstrong), goody hamper compliments Smalta, Holiday Snacks, Bermudez (A. S. Brydens), Book package from Collins Publishers, and a trophy. 
 
For the honour of second place, Grace Christian’s Andreas Pereira was awarded with a tablet along with six months free internet compliments APUA Inet, $1,000 Savings Account compliments Scotia Bank, Haliborange Vitamins package compliments Seven Seas (Frank B Armstrong), goody hamper compliments Smalta, Holiday Snacks, Bermudez (A. S. Brydens), Book package from Collins Publishers, and a trophy.
 
Piggots Primary, Tajorn Seaman received three months free internet and tablet compliments APUA Inet, a $500 Savings Account compliments Scotia Bank, Haliborange Vitamins package compliments Seven Seas (frank B Armstrong), $500 worth of School Supplies, goody hamper compliments Smalta, Holiday Snacks, Bermudez (A. S. Brydens), Book package from Collins Publishers, and a trophy.



The winning school – T. N. Kirnon Primary – will benefit from a school enhancement initiative valued at EC$2,500.00, which the members of the Rotaract Club of Antigua will perform during the year.
 
All participants also received a free goodie bag with school supplies from Scotia Bank, Collins Publishing, and ECAB at the end of the overall competition.

Club President Rickisha Terry said, “This is an event we look forward to every year. The ability of these students is amazing and the Spelling Bee celebrates a unique kind of academic talent.  I’m glad we have the opportunity to highlight and reward academic study this way.”
 
The Rotaract Club of Antigua Spelling Bee competition promotes literacy and helps students improve their spelling and vocabulary skills. Spellers are challenged to think under pressure and experience being in the spotlight.
