State College teachers reach understanding with ministry of education

The Ministry of Education says protesting lecturers at the Antigua State College have returned to work.

In a press release, the ministry said an agreement between them and the lecturers was secured after a meeting on Tuesday that included ministry officials, Antigua State College administrators and representatives from the Union of Tertiary Educators.

Director of Education Clare Browne said during the meeting, “concerns being expressed by the teaching staff were discussed in detail and an agreement was reached that the issues at both Five Islands and the Golden Grove plants of the Antigua State College will be addressed as a matter of urgency.”

Browne maintains that the staff was not being neglected, and that repair work on the physical structure of the Golden Grove campus, which is at the heart of industrial action, began last year. However, Browne noted, that there have been delays in acquiring certain equipment to complete the construction work.

A-levels and Business department lecturers began protest action on Monday saying they would not return to the classroom until their issues – a lack of furniture, bathrooms in need of repair and upkeep, and poor internet service – were addressed.

Reportedly, all parties have agreed to improve communication, as they work together to bring about resolution to the areas of concern.

Another meeting is scheduled for next week to discuss the progress of work at Antigua State College.

  1. Wait hold up…do they teach at ASC or Lecture at ASC?
Its a “COLLEGE”…No Teaching involved…LECTURING if you please.
The Staff up there carry varying BSc, BAs, Masters and maybe a Phd…stop the teaching and start the LECTURING!!
You go there to get an Ass., BA or leading to a BSc….no teaching …lecturing please
not CXC level 1 to 5…no teaching…lecturing please.
