Sandals Grande Antigua has joined hands with the Women of Esteem Foundation to execute the 2018 Camp Go Girl aimed at empowering young women in a summer programme themed “Go Girl – Control Your Destiny!”

Officially commencing on Monday August 13th at the Sea View Farm Primary School, the two-week #GoGirl2018 camp is geared towards “raising resilient girls in today’s society”.

Almost 150 girls will experience life changing activities and team building exercises that, according to organizers, will embolden them to take decisive steps in embracing their femininity and ultimately realizing their destinies.

General Manager for Sandals Grande Antigua Mr. Matthew Cornall has reaffirmed Sandals’ commitment to youth development.

He said these initiatives are in keeping with the ethos of Sandals’ Chairman Gordon ‘Butch’ Stewart and Deputy Chairman, Adam Stewart, who didn’t hesitate to personally lend support to the initiative.

“This is the kind of effort and energy we love to see. As an organization which prides itself on the work of the Sandals Foundation, we are beyond pleased to be in association with this programme. We believe strongly in the encouragement of such activities that really empower our young women to step forward and take charge of their own destinies. And we hope that the strong women within the Sandals family will serve as examples to young women everywhere who may doubt their own potential,” Cornall said.

Sandals Resorts is the platinum sponsor of #GoGirl2018.

Sandals Grande’s Training and Development Manager Ms. Matara Murphy, in engaging the campers at Monday’s opening ceremony, spoke of her own journey through life, education and career decisions – all of which she cited as key to her personal and professional growth

“As women and young girls, it is important for us to recognize early, our potential and focus on where we want to be. Antigua might be a tiny island but it is filled with loads of opportunities for all of us and these opportunities are not restricted by gender. So, it is vital that we take ownership of our destiny and steer our life decisions in a direction of significance,” Murphy said.

The Women of Esteem Foundation led Camp #GoGirl2018 will run through to Friday August 24th and caters to girls between the ages of 7-17 years old.

President and Founder of Women of Esteem Nikki Phoenix said, “As a major focus this year, all activities at Camp #GoGirl2018 will equip girls with social and emotional coping Skills, inclusive of interactive and in-depth sessions facilitated by notable experts in their respective fields.”

Lady Sandra Williams, wife of Governor General of Antigua & Barbuda, was also present at Monday’s launch.

Week one of the camp will feature sessions with Certified Personal Coach Dr. Marlyn Morris from Canada and Magistrate Natalia Bevans of Belize. It will also expose the young ladies to a UN- Women Caribbean – Select Pool of Expert Trainer and Researcher who will deliver on Prevalence of Domestic Violence against Women and Girls. This first week will see all campers receiving a Certificate at the end of the Session.

The second week of activities are geared more towards tackling the girls’ social skills through field trips, dance, and arts & craft. It will also include empowerment workshops, environmental talks, and sporting activities before wrapping up with a graduation and certification ceremony on August 24th.
