Prime Minister Gaston Browne on Tuesday called on the Rastafarian community to get involved in politics.
He invited the community to join his party.
“We are quite willing to accommodate Rastafari in any aspect of our government. If y’all want run on the Labour Party slate next election, I’ll accommodate a Rastafari, my team will accommodate a Rastafari”, he said.
“I’d approached Kai Davis and others prior to the last elections to get a member of the Rastafari community to serve in the Senate,” the Prime Minister revealed.
“Unfortunately, they declined.”
Nonetheless, the nation’s leader continued to urge those in the community towards possible future political aspirations.
“You may want to revisit it because I think there is an opportunity there for Rastafari to step up and to serve at all levels. Rastafari are supposed to be in the Parliament of Antigua and Barbuda. You should be serving in all the councils of the world,” Browne concluded.

No “true” dread will link up themselves with the Babylonian system.
I think PM Browne is very kind and nice to offer this to us, at least he is trying. The reality is that Rasta’s enjoy a non-political life and just basically enjoying existing. That said, Rasta’s in Antigua are much cooler than the Rasta’s in other countries (we tend to be calmer, safer, more happy and smarter), so hopefully Rasta’s of Antigua will participate in Antigua’s growth and positive future in some way.

Yes, PM Browne is very kind. Please….let’s stop trying to verbally tear each other down just because we have different political views. Antigua is one the smallest countries on the planet, we need to get along and be happy together.
PM Browne must have learned something from VC Bird. This call and invitation to the Rasta is a smart and political one. The Rastafarian community has quite a following and it is a clear way of getting their votes. In fact, this legalization of ganja was the first move and he is willing to go further. I am not quite certain as to how genuine his call was though. This is much like back then when the Labour Party allowed Caribbean nationals living here for 3 years to register and vote after giving them amnesty. Smart political move I dare say but nowadays, foreigners almost out number Antiguans and they are the ones that ultimately decide on the kind of Government we have. I am still of the view that until and unless a foreigner becomes a citizen of Antigua and Barbuda, he/she should never be allowed to vote.
