Prime Minister Gaston Browne says he will revoke the appointment of Alex Saab Moran if the businessman is charged in relation to any wrongdoing.

Authorities confirmed last week that Saab is an economic envoy for Antigua and Barbuda.

The businessman has interests in Venezuela and is being linked to allegations of money laundering, a claim which he denies.

Speaking on Pointe FM over the weekend, Browne said Saab is a well-known individual who runs a chain of supermarkets in Venezuela and is also involved in the construction business.

The prime minister said although he has known Saab for six years “I cannot vouch for his integrity from the standpoint that when people are involved in that kind of trade and so much money, they always say there is no clean big money.”

Browne said the economic envoy he is close to the Maduro government and “there are opposition elements who are seeking to berate him.”

The prime minister hastened to add that he was not defending the businessman.

He said if Saab is charged with any offence he will be removed.

” All I can say to the people of Antigua and Barbuda (is) if at any time Mr. Saab is charged for any wrongdoing they can be sure we will revoke his appointment.”

A website post by blogger Kenneth Rijock claims that two associates of the Antigua and Barbuda diplomatic passport holder have been arrested by Colombia authorities for money laundering and fraud.

The prime minister said Saab Moran had plans to a factory in Antigua which would then supply homes to Venezuela.

He said the project had to be put on hold because moving money out of Venezuela has come difficult.
