PM says time to end outdated trade embargo on Cuba

Prime Minister Gaston Browne has called for an end to the senseless and outdated trade embargo placed on Cuba by the United States more than five decades ago.

Speaking at the United Nation General Assembly on Friday, Browne said Antigua and Barbuda welcomes a recent visit to Cuba by the Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee of the United States, Mr. Bob Corker, to talk about relations between the two countries.

He said progress is never made in a straight line and that there have been many zigs and zags.

“But after five decades of imposing a trade embargo on Cuba, the senselessness of this policy should be obvious to all,’ Browne said during a near 20 minute speech.

He told the UN that “It is time to end it, and to provide the Cuban nation with the chance they have been so long denied, to put their well-known talents in medicine, in the arts, in music, in education at the disposal of all humanity. “

“We again call on the Congress of the United States to abandon the outdated trade embargo of Cuba, and to renew the avenues of dialogue and cooperation that offer beneficial prospects for the peoples of both countries, and by extension, to all the Americas,” the prime minister added.

  1. He need to ficus on Antigua and Barbuda issues and leave Cuba and America embargo situation alone. He might be called world boss in ANU but not at the UN General Assembly. Please Mr. PM focus on home in getting our money owed to us by America from the WTO ruling decision.

    • This is not something new. Antigua and Barbuda has been one of the the first if not the first voice that has been calling on lifting the embargo against Cuba. And this forum is the best forum to make your voice heard. No matter how small of a nation you are. The whole world is listening to each and every country’s leader that speaks. The only thing I do not like is the sequence in which they are awarded to speak.

    • Chups says the person who posted on a recent arrival that the US should give us that old run down base as a trade off for the debt. Anything goes as long as you it is aganist the PM and the governament.
