The highly anticipated bill which will allow residents to change their mobile providers while keeping their number is expected to be considered by the parliament today.
This follows a meeting to the Cabinet last week by the APUA General Manager and a telecommunications expert to address the amendment to the Telecommunications Act.
The 1951 law is to be amended in order to allow the portability of cell phone numbers.
At this moment, a customer wishing to change his/her phone carrier has to change telephone number as well.
The government says the object of the amendment to the law is to ensure that customers can keep their numbers but utilize another phone carrier.
The 1951 law requires the establishment of a Commission or some other neutral body that will oversee the management of the system.

This law should have been passed 10 years ago, why are we only getting it now? I guess better late than never.
Yes I too have been waiting for this law to come in to being. I have for the past 25 years had one cell number because of my business contacts. changing it will leave a lot of my clients wondering how to get in touch with me. And I hate to change my business card for this reason as well
