Opposition leader says to put more issues on the referendum ballot

Opposition Leader Jamal Pringle today made his party’s position on the upcoming referendum clear.

Jamal Pringle told debate on the Antigua Barbuda Constitutional Amendment Bill 2018 that his party won’t support the CCJ if it is the sole item on the ballot.

“My party’s position, Mr. Speaker, is that this single issue referendum is one needs to change,” Pringle told the Lower House.

“We need to put more issues on the ballot to show people we are moving towards full constitutional reform,” he said.

The Leader of the Opposition is arguing that “the majority of our electorate still do not understand what it is they are asked to vote for.”

He said the education effort for the CCJ is sending mixed signals.

In pointing out the apparent contradiction with the process, Pringle said: “On the other hand, you tell me to support our Caribbean brothers and sister in terms of judges and on the other hand you are telling me that we should continue to pledge our alliance to the Queen.”

“Mr speaker, unless they address the issue of the single issue referendum we will not support a single issue referendum. We have no problem with the CCJspeakerbut there are other issues that we need to address,” he said.

Antigua and Barbuda will hold its first referendum on November 6, 2018.

  1. Like ministers in politics cant provide E books or close family members?….like ministers in office that make up the government cant rent their properties to themselves/government……ministers will have to pay 20%of whatever their utilities are/housing…..change after serving 3 terms they get full pension…..you must beable to vote after 9 years living in the country ……and more

  2. I for one will be voting NO to the CCJ. On a sidenote, Mr. Pringle as Leader of the Opposition you have to “come betta dan dat man” with your discourse in Parliament. You need some coaching, practice, pointers from those who are seasoned. Sen. Shawn Nicholas can help you in this regard. As it stands, you are not cutting it in the style and manner in which you are presenting. Remember that you are not just an MP.

  3. Vote YES! First step to getting rid of the British Royal family (wellfare fat cats) as our head of state. When will we stop looking to the north to solve our problems.

  4. We are all brothers and sisters and we should vote Yes for the CCJ . Let us control our own future and to be free from the hands of white massa
