The Prices and Consumer Affairs Division today assured the public that a YouTube video which has been making the rounds on social media, captioned: “Courts rob people on Black Friday. must see” did not originate in Antigua and Barbuda.

“The video, which alleges possible price gouging, was drawn to our attention last week and has been the source of much investigation. From our findings, and from discussions held with Courts here is Antigua and Barbuda, we are satisfied that the video was not recorded in Antigua but at another of the store’s region allocations,” the division said in a news release.

Further, the Unicomer Group of which COURTS is a subsidiary, in a statement referred to the “video posted online showing a disparity in the price of washing machines at one of our branches in St Lucia.”

The division said It is the practice of consumers here in Antigua and Barbuda to visit store outlets prior to Black Friday and others major sale activities to identify items that they would like to purchase during the sale so they can capitalize on the savings.

To date, the Division said it has not received any complaints from the Black Friday sales regarding price gouging.

“The Division assures the public, that it will continue its vigilance in its efforts to protect consumers and should we find any evidence of unethical behavior by any trader in Antigua and Barbuda, we will not hesitate to deal with the perpetrator(s) in accordance with the law.”

  1. I was burned by Courts and mark my words, even if it meant my having to eat off of my floor and my sleeping on a rug instead of a bed, not another dollar. 33% and upwards hirepurchase is criminal, the prices and consumer affairs dept. should protect consumers from these wolves in sheep clothing. And what is worse, it was my experience that their account personnel and branch managers were quite disingenious. NOT ANOTHER DOLLAR!!

    • I agree 100% with you – NOT ANOTHER DOLLAR !
They can do so much better but chose not to. It cost less to import furniture and appliance of high quality than buying them at Courts at the cost price and even worst the hire purchase price.
The people that suffers most is poor people because they may be in need of the items right away and not have the time to save to send oversea and then they end up paying twice for the items.
Courts Antigua have been good to you be good to us!

  2. I feel you and so many have said that,Courts is a wicked greedy company, the devil is always in the details.I hate vampires that take advantage and leaches on poor people.

  3. I was not surprised when I saw the video. I am sure that Courts is not the only company that engages in such DESPICABLE, UNETHICAL, DISHONEST behaviour! Car dealerships do it too. It is quite DISGUSTING how they attempt to let customer “believe” that they are doing them such a great favour by “reducing” their prices.

“The LOVE OF money” is truly the root of all kinds of evil

  4. What is so fuuny aru know how courts tap and aru till go buy them good chupps its either u buy or u nah buy they did not hold a gun to ya head and tell u shop there

    • Like I said, the mangers are devious so the consumer does not know until he/she advances in the process that interest is calculated by some hocus pocus method. Ask them to show you how they work out rebates. When you see that noone can, that’s when you realise the scam. And then they give you the run around. But the bottom will soon fall out!

  5. Another clothing store was also doing the same thing. A shirt that cost $85.00 was $150 on black friday with the sign saying buy one at regular price get 2 free but in actuality you are pretty much buying all 3.
